I love swifty's photos. But do note that at least one of them I got wrong (I was about 1 km out)
This one is a bit different to his others though.

The cut out bit was something like an old railway bridge or washout. You can just make out the old railway line cutting working its way around Mt Lyell.
I have thought it would be nice to access some of the old tramlines that worm around Mt Lyell and up the side of Sedgewick- but I think I would have to access them through the mine site.

This will be the view up from the main Queenstown road which goes through Linda and Gormanston as it rises up towards the high point before dropping down into Queenstown via the highly coloured hillside with the very snakey road.

Its the mountain/ridgeline marked as Mt Lyell in the skyline of this photo.

If I am right - the next person can tell me where I took this from.

You're close enough eggs, but once again you are about 1 km out! :wink: This photo taken from the edge of the Mt Lyell pit (the big one, not the Iron Blow). On what was once romantically referred to as "Philosophers Ridge" 8) .

Actually I see swifty is asking for precision - and from the angles, my answer will not be correct.

It is more likely he is actually in the mine workings - possibly the old Iron Blow lookout, but more likely above the main open cut of Mt Lyell.

Edit - I see we crossed over again :roll:
PS - next photo is up - and you have a pretty good idea with all those labels.

It could be a quiet day - Fridays can be as every one gears up for the weekend
Or the normal suspects are a bit worn out
Or people don't realise there is a picture up for guessing where it was taken

So - I was thinking of this one previously to illustrate Mt Lyall - good view of path of "windy road" on colourful hillside as well.
You can pick either of the 2 photos (both of Mt Lyall incidentally) to tell me where they were taken- bonus if you can get both spots.

OK eggs I'll have a go. Pretty sure I've been to the second spot a few years ago, but I don't have my own photos handy to check. Spion Kopje lookout above Queenstown? We didn't take pizza though, and I think it was raining (unusual for Queenstown :wink:).

The first one I think may be taken from somewhere along the Mt Jukes Road. So I'll say from Mt Jukes.

1 out of 2 will do - to keep it going.
Thanks johnw

The Spion Kopf lookout is in the middle of Queenstown and gives great 360 degree views & we had a lovely balmy night to eat some pizza while the sun was setting on the town and surrounding mountains.
Better than eating inside.
The next time we went through Queenstown was for the train trip - and it was very wet - the more usual weather - but very nice on the train.

The other location is in fact a lookout cut on the Lyall Highway on the way to Strahan.
Its just near the road junction for a rough track that goes down to the train line at Rinadeena Station.

It's a very interesting part of the world on the west coast, from an historic perspective I recommend you read Blainey's "Peaks of Lyell" for a detailed account of the history of the mines. I am a geologist so very interesting for me too :D . I would like to do a traverse from the Tyndalls thru Sedgwick and Owen, maybe look at continuing down to Jukes and Darwin, nice country. :mrgreen:

Thanks eggs, we also did the train trip during the visit I was recalling. Called in to Queenstown again briefly last month on the way from Lake St Clair to Corinna. We visited the WCWR cafe for lunch then picked up some groceries. And, just for a change, it was raining :). I think I know roughly where that other lookout is but have never stopped there. Here's the next one.

Coincidentally I've almost finished reading "Western Tasmania - A Land of Riches and Beauty" by Charles Witham, which has a similar perspective covering the whole west coast and its mines, including the Lyell ones of course. It's a reprint of a very old book, which I picked up during our recent trip. I'm not a geologist though, so some of the details go over my head when it comes to discussing the composition and quality of ore etc. The early exploration was mainly what attracted me to it. Agree, some extended walking through the region would be great :).

Sorry walkinTas
I wasn't sure folk had caught onto my tricky answer being the next puzzle.
but if you are counting places of origin - it would count as 2 - though in my stats I have counted it as 1.
I now show 329 competition photos posted - does that tally with yours? I am not confident on this and it is very hard to check if you get out of step.
I suspect you are not so particular about the answers - with about 4 photos answered by the poster (and now one of these), the number of correct answers is less than the postings.

You should have a go at johnw's posting.
The only idea I have at the moment is that it is highly likely to be from a bridge - probably a road bridge.

Swifty 328, Eggs 329, johnw 330. Yep. :D

A bridge looking down a river in a rain forest. A river with a fair bit of tannin and doesn't appear to have been flooded for a while (so possibly below a dam). But no, I haven't got a guess. Yet!

River = Yes
Tannin = Yes
Rainforest = Yes
Dam = Not below a dam. Closest dam is probably 20km away or more, and I don't think it affects this river.
Bridge = Not from a bridge.

Hint: Photo was not taken on my recent visit.

Not the Tarkine eggs. Different part of the state, though it is an area sometimes discussed with similar passion and controversy...

Maybe another clue to narrow it down a bit. It's kinda south-west.
