Quick hint to narrow it down a bit. It's in the Waikato district.

Tyreless, my research suggests this is Bridal Veil Falls; nearest town appears to be Raglan.

100% correct, John. I got back from NZ 2 weeks ago, including some time at Raglan with a visit to Bridal Veil Falls (very impressive) and Waitomo Caves (fantastic!).

Thanks Tyreless, I don't think I'd have got it without the clue. NZ remains on my bucket list, which I should address as it's so close.

Did you walk through this one John?

Only part of it eggs, out and back. My wife was with me and long walks aren't her thing. Very much enjoyed it though, you don't need to go too far to become immersed in the landscape here. I'd happily return and do more next time. It was fairly strenuous to climb back up due to the altitude.

I remembered this view of the Haleakala Crater on Maui from my brother's photos of his visit about 40 years ago.

That's it eggs, crater of the currently dormant Haleakala volcano. Predominant landscape in the crater is cinder desert and the different hues are stunning. I've never seen anything like it. it's over 10,000 feet at the summit; had a slight headache and was a little short of breath on steep uphill sections.

Anyone can post the next one.

I realise that most of these games will be getting a lot slower as we go.
This might be a bit harder - but if you get to Switzerland, you should do a walk at this spot.

On a walking track out from Schynige Platte - just past Tuba at 2076m and the crag is Gumihorn at 2099m

Eggs, I believe you are looking at the Eiger, Munch and Jungfrau in the background but this location is trickier to pin down.

Correct area John. There is a railway station behind the close in hill.

eggs, Is it a "normal" railway or one of those mountain rack and pinion systems?

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

It appears to use a Riggenbach rack system - it was a steep climb

Is this somewhere near Lauterbrunnen?

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

Thu 22 Oct, 2015 1:51 pm

I believe that's up on Schynige Platte, looking up towards Lauterbrunnen and the three big peaks in the background?

Re: Game: Where-is-it? (international)

Thu 22 Oct, 2015 3:15 pm

Schynige Platte is correct.
A lovely spot with easy walking tracks taking in dramatic views in every direction, and when we were there lots of alpine flowers in full display.
Lauterbrunnen valley is slightly visible on the right.
The middle distance peak is Mannlichen with the intervening valley below being the route to Grindelwald.
We were just past Tuba at 2076m and the crag is Gumihorn at 2099m

Cheers eggs and yes, it's a beautiful area of the world.

Unfortunately I don't have any worthwhile international pictures on me at the moment (might be time for another holiday I think!) so anyone is free to go next.

I knew the area immediately bit couldn't quite pick the spot. The closest I got to this was Vernal Fall - I'd say this is looking at Liberty Cap and Nevada Fall with Half Dome in the background, among other things (Yosemite Valley). Maybe taken from somewhere above Vernal Fall on the John Muir Trail?

A crater? Dry? In Oregon?

It is a crater, but not on the US mainland. The climate is tropical, tempered by some altitude.

To narrow it down this is in Hawaii.

It's too lush and that excludes many of the higher ones... Ummm. On Oahu?

Larger than Oahu. You'd be surprised how things can vary between lush and complete desolation in a relatively compact area, and what will grow out of lava. The "smoke" in the background of the second image may provide a further clue.

Mauna Loa on the big island? Crater Rim Trail? LOL, there are so many 'crater rim trails'.
