Mt Pillinger up to date accesss

Postby Thomas » Thu 12 Nov, 2015 8:17 pm

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. Looking to get up to Mt Pillinger at the weekend, but have heard that theres been some issues with road access since the big white out earlier in the year.

Has someone been into the area very recently that can provide an update on road access to the carpark @ the head of the track....??

Rgds,

T.

Was up there about 2 months ago (well after the big snow dump). Easiest & quickest is from Maggs Spur 17 (wonderfully scenic too). After you turn right off Mersey Forest Rd, take the left hand fork (Maggs Rd). Then Take Maggs Spur 17 and drive to the carpark at end. We did it in my partner's golf though a little more clearance would have been nice. Ordinary 2wd (ie more clearance than a golf!) will have no problems.

Looks like there had been a few trees down but someone did a great job clearing the road. We actually had an interesting time driving out as a burn from down in the valley jumped Maggs road which with the blustery conditions meant a fair bit of smoke and flames on both sides of the road.

There's no problem with the road (or wasn't a couple of weeks back). The Arm R track has had some rerouting of the initial hill climb. I doubt there is much benefit in using Maggs spur17.

No worries Thomas. I should have probably noted that it's 17/2 as you take a right hand fork a little way up spur 17 (tagged from memory) in case you haven't been up there before.
As for the different tracks, both good options but you start a fair bit higher from maggs spur 17. plenty of discussion on both if you have a search of the forum. Enjoy!

Looks like you had some great weather! I'm pretty sure I have almost the exact same photographs (minus the humans!). I think it's one of the best shortish walks in the NW. Have you been up Roogoona yet?

I'm yet to get there, so I think that'll be my next day walk in that part of the world (though a full day rather than a a brilliant half day like Pillinger).

Hi Osik,

Have been to the base of Ragoona, but the weather was terrible - low cloud (pic attached) - so no climb that day. We are discussing an overnighter @ Lake Mrtyle, with a climb of Ragoona included....might have to coordinate a catchup & climb..!! :D

Agree with Pillinger being one of the best 'bang for bucks' walk, although we didn't push too hard, still managing to arrive back in the carpark @ around 2:45pm. The next challenge for Pillinger is to now climb from Lee's Paddocks - that may have to be an overnighter too..!!

T.

In terms of bang for your buck walks in the NW, I reckon Murchison's pretty hard to beat but there are certainly some brilliant half to full day walks going about.
