The stars have aligned and I am seizing the day :)

Postby Alittleruff » Fri 20 Nov, 2015 1:35 pm

Hello to all those in bushwalk world. Thank you for your support and contributions as I gathered gear, and mustered up the courage to head out.
My first hike, didn't go so well a couple of weeks ago. I was prepared, I survived minus degree Celsius weather with ease. All my gear worked well, and I generally enjoyed the environment. The one thing I learned, is that you need the right kind of hiking buddies.

So I trundled back into my home. An excited family greeted me. I'd headed out for 1 night. Which, was a big deal. The first night I've been away from my family since my eldest was born. She, my eldest got excited. I guess this hiking thing is contagious. She has the bug. She even made me a list of places to go, after researching it using the computer. My 8 year old is fearlessly independent, and getting to that age that I really should seize the day and spend 1:1 time with her.

So I booked in to Wilsons Prom. Tomorrow, we will be heading out to Sealers Cove. We are both as excited as you can get. I brought some gear, my bank account was not pleased. But here is the thing, next year, she will be 9, then 10.... then who knows if she will want to hang out with her mum. I'm starting early in the hope that we can have a firm relationship to build from before puberty and boys strike.

The stars have aligned. I'm no longer breastfeeding my baby, it's been 4 weeks! My middle child is helpful and will have some time with his dad and brother while his sister & I are gone. My husband is supportive. The tides are excellent for walking into Sealers. The weather should be mild, 18 degrees and 11 degrees overnight. My daughter is still enthusiastic, and nerves haven't taken hold yet, her anxiety hasn't hit thankfully- cross fingers.

My daughters list-
Wilsons Prom National Park
Lake Eildon National Park
Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park
Cape Conran Coastal Park
Discovery Bay Coastal Park
Baw Baw National Park
Lower Glenlg National Park
Jamieson
Wombat State Forest.

Oh BOY! We are super excited!!!!

Awesome, good for you!
Enjoy it!

I just spent a month daywalking in the European Alps with my Mum who is in her seventies, I hope you start a lifelong journey you can share together with your daughter this weekend!

You will have a ball at Wilsons Prom. Check with the ranger as to parking at Telegraph Saddle or whether the shuttle bus is operating. Enjoy the views and the tranquil surroundings at Sealers.

Will be heading down there next week with three friends for the three day hike from Sealers through Refuge and Little Waterloo.

Sounds like a great way to spend time with your daughter, enjoy yourselves. Our two girls (now 21 and 24) our still coming on walks with us, in fact that's what we're doing for Christmas this year.

Would love to hear how you went. I'm planning this as my first walk.
- what is the water like at sealers, do you need to treat it.
- is there a river/ creek crossing near sealers. Do you have to wait for the tides
Any other tips

Alittleruff, great news and look forward to reading your report! Your daughter's list looks fun. We took the kids canoeing down the Glenelg River, which means you wouldn't have to carry gear on your back. Also, our kids loved the Beeripmo Trail as one of their first walks.

Keep getting out there and ENJOY!!!
