TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Hiking boots for alpine hiking

Fri 25 Dec, 2015 5:16 pm

I've had to retire my Merrel Moab mid boots after they started to fall apart on completion of a 6 day hike. They were great boots for the price and were comfortable and versatile.
I'm wanting something a bit more substantial as my hiking trips are becoming longer and more technical. Orginally i was looking at something like the Scarpa kenesis but i think that it might be too heavy and now I'm considering the Salamon QUEST 4D 2 GTX or the Vasque St. Elias GTX.

What would you guys reccomend for a mid range hiking boot that would be suitable in an alpine environment with lots of wet rock and vegetation and some snow (Nz or tassie)

Vasque Erikksons gtx. From brand new they felt worn in , wide toe box, very waterproof , have used in snow, and are rather light ,mid weight range

I have the Salomon Quest 4d in GTX, bought maybe 4 years ago and they're great. Some people warned me that Salomons don't last but they're been rock solid for me, very comfortable. Warm enough in snow too. Can't help you with a comparison but can happily recommend the salomon. Might be worth trying them both on and see how they feel.
