Mt Ossa Summit via Arm River Track

Fri 25 Sep, 2009 4:15 pm

Hi all,

I’m very new to the forum, some very good information here indeed :)

A friend and I are planning a trip to the summit of Ossa via the arm river track at the end of October, we plan to do it over night and stay at the Pelion hut, and I was wondering how much use does the hut get @ that time of year?

I am already getting excited about the trip and still a month away !!!

Regards

Matt

G'day Matt,
Welcome to the forum, Pelion Hut at that time of year should have a fair amount of space.
Dont know what experience you have but Arm River track to PH then up Ossa and back to PH is a BIG day 3 to 4 hours on the ART then about 45 mins to Pelion Gap then around 2 and a half hour return trip up Ossa and around 35 mins back to PH [down hill :) ] so all and all you are looking at up to 8 hours of walking and that is if there is no snow on Ossa or elsewhere to slow you down.
It is a fantastic walk just a pity you cannot do it over two nights, don't forget the photographs :)

Hi Corvos

Thanks for the info,

We plan to walk into PH, stay the night, then up early the next day n off to the summit and hopefully return to the car that night. We plan to explore a couple of the lakes, (I’m a bit of a fly fishing nut) on the way into PH if time permits.

Hopefully this will give us fresh legs for the summit :o

G'day Mat ,
That sounds very reasonable,I know there are fish in lake Price and in the small lakes that
the Wurragarra rises from but not being [ a fluff chucker  ] cannot give any further info into piscatorial pursuits.

The amount of fishing time will no doubt reflect on how much training i get in between now and then lol 3 - 4 hours could very easily be blown out :o

There should be plenty of room in Pelion Hut - I was there just over a week ago, and the hut was less than half full for our two-night-stay.
I'd always take a tent anyway just in case.

We did the same route you are planning, but took two nights (walking in one evening, from Lk Price to Pelion with torches).
If you are mad keen, you should be able to manage Pelion - Ossa - Pelion - Arm River in one day (but it really depends on conditions, such as snow levels etc - which crovus alluded to).

We did Pelion-Ossa-Pelion in about 8 hours, but this included a goodly covering of snow.

Hi Kramster,

Thank's for the info, Our origional plan was to do it in & out in a day but we decided against it for our first trip up that way, no doubt we'll plan to head back up that way for a day trip once we know the area a little better :)

Matt

Hi Matt_22,
I have done this trip a couple of times and strongly suggest an extra night!
Summiting Ossa from Pelion Hut and back to the Arm river carpark is a very long day!
Have Summitted and camped the night then it's an easy day walk back to the carpark.
Sunrise views from the summit are breath taking!

Top Picture Lagaro,

An extra night does sound good, we arnt really that restricted by time, when we get back to PH we might access how we're felling, if need be we stay an extra night, then take it easy on the way out the next day :)

Cheer's

Matt

I climbed Mount Ossa via the Arm River track just over a week ago. It is a great walk and it is possible to do it in one day in summer, it took me 10.5 hours including messing around at the summit for 15 minutes trying to climb the summit rock and failing. The advantage of a day trip for me was the light pack. A 2 day trip would allow you to climb Mount Oakleigh or Mount Pelion East as well and not feel time pressured.
