TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Where are good places to buy maps from??

Map shops.

Most good outdoor shops will carry maps. If you're near Melbourne, try Bogong, Paddy Pallin, places like that. There is a dedicated map shop in Victoria - try the yellow Pages, or Google.
Also, it depends exactly which maps you want. Some of the state mapping authorities (such as TasMap) sell direct to the public via online sites. Often Tourist Info centres in the more popular areas will also carry maps. So do many National Parks Visitor Centres in some states.

You can also buy and download computer based maps - usually as pdf files from the various state mapping agencies. These can be printed out as well as viewed on your computer and are often able to be used on your smart phone in conjunction with the gps in the phone (my personal preference). A look around this site will show quite a few threads on computer based mapping. Recently the Australian state mapping agencies have made the raw data available for free for those who have skills to create their own maps - again you will come across some threads talking about the nswtopo script.

Definitely a good suggestion. For Vic, you can get the topo maps in PDF or georeferenced PDF format https://services.land.vic.gov.au/maps/i ... mation.jsp to either printout yourself, or use in conjunction with some mapping software like Avenza PDF maps or Orux maps to view on your smart devices.

I've used The Map Shop on Peel Street, Adelaide a number of times. They always seem to have the map I need. Service isn't tops, though, and they seem to be a dollar or so dearer than anybody else.

Get this. I grabbed a copy of the Rooftop Marysville - Lake Eildon Adventure Map for a bicycle tour I just went on, from them. It seemed every shop I passed, from the general store in Tallarook, to the newsagent in Alexandra, had this map, for the RRP - rather than the $1 I paid in Adelaide.

And you still go to them? Why? Are you paying for a service others don't offer? Market force is interesting.

They seem to be a dollar or so dearer than anybody else but you paid $1 for a map from them. Were the other shops giving them away for free?

The other shops charged RRP. The Map Shop in Adelaide charged around a buck more. I bought my map at The Map Shop in Adelaide. :)

Price of convenience, 1/3 of an one way bus fare these days. Good luck to the business while they can get away with it. Here in Sydney, 'map shop' has long vanished from the CBD and other premium locations.

Oh, I'm not complaining. Jus' sayin'. The thread called for 'good places to buy maps' so I shared my experience with one store.

But you're right, with the rise of the digital, it seems the traditional map and its retailers, are falling. Interestingly, The Map Shop in Adelaide is located on Peel Street - one of Adelaide's most successfully revitalised streets. So many other businesses on the street have been moved on through gentrification, but the ol' map shop is still there, keeping on among trendy bars and restaurants.

Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy visiting those map shops as there's always something they have that'll take me a bit of an effort or time delay to get. Out local one is now way out in Parramatta the last time I visited.
