Tawonga Huts/The Fainters/Young's hut

Wed 27 Jan, 2016 9:47 pm

Hi, Over the invasion day /survival day long weekend I led a small group out on a 3 days and two nights pack carry hike of the Bogong High Plains area.
Day one was Pretty Valley to Tawonga huts for lunch. We then went up to the summit of the "Politically correct melanin enhanced non race specific " Heads range and then bush bashed it cross country to the Fainter fire trail just before Salt Camp Creek.
Navigation was easy on the off track section. We camped just up the hill a bit from Salt Camp Creek . The water was flowing well. After setting up tents etc. we went up to the summit of Fainter south. The views from there and the freaky clouds made for a spectacular vista.
It was cold that night with a clear sky. I should have taken my winter sleeping bag.
We were up early on Sunday and headed for Young's hut via the easy Fainters fire trail . It was busy at pole 333, people were converging from all directions. Mt Jim at lunch time was like an ant hill that had been kicked over. It was crawling with humans.
We made it to Young's hut in good time. It is a beautiful spot. The hut is infested with mice.
When we woke up on Monday it was very foggy and cool. In fact we could only see as far as the next pole on the pole line that leads back up onto the treeless plateau.
It was clear on the high plains and the scenery with clouds swirling around Mt Loch was amazing.
We made it back to the cars at Pretty Valley by 12.30 pm.
It was a pleasant and scenic hike and not too taxing . There was no insane Dimantina spur kind of torture involved. It did not rain once the whole time
All those who took part in this hike enjoyed it very much. :-)

A group of us walk into the Fainters 2 weeks ago via the politically correct renamed mountain and then cross country via the old Fainters Goldfields and on to Salt Camp Creek. Set up camp and then made our way up to Fainter Nth via the fire trail for the great views. Weather was mild and dry and walked out Sunday via Tawonga Huts on Sunday morning. Here area couple of pics
