LISTmap to GPS

Mon 18 Apr, 2016 6:24 pm

Hi All

Wondering if anyone can give me some info in relation to transferring data from the LISTmap to GPS. Can this be done? Especially things like the Land tenure data set?

Thanks in advance.

regards,

Matt

Hi,

There are a few different ways to get there, unfortunately there is no straight forward one click solution.
You need to add the Land Tenure layer, then export / clip and ship to an ESRI shapefile (or one of the other formats).
You then need to somehow convert that shp file data to the format required for your GPS.
There are plenty of tools out there that can convert a shp to garmin.
But depends on what sort of GPS you are talking about.

The whole process is non-trivial and your end result might not be as exciting as you hope.

Some GPS units can handle KML / KMZ files (google earth) so that is your other option.

Good luck..

Thanks for the info Azza.

From my take on your reply it would be easier to make a paper copy and plot a few markers on the GPS as a guideline lol.

I will have a play latter tonight and see what I come up with. Thanks again for the reply!

Cheers

All depends on your computer skills ;-)

I forgot there is also direct web service access.

http://services.thelist.tas.gov.au/arcg ... /MapServer

You can get the data as a KMZ file, but its still referencing the server.

If you purchase the digital 1:25000 maps (or other scale maps) you can load the kmz version that is supplied into the custom maps folder.

NOTE: You can only load a few maps at a time, not the whole state

Thanks tastrax,

I was referring to the layers you can add to a map, not the map its self.

For example, a tenure layer (as pictured).

There is no real easy way to do that on a regular basis (given tenure changes). For that sort of layer I would go with a smartphone alternative, but even then it's not always straight forward.

What are the layers that you regularly want to view?

Mapwel is one of the easier programs to accomplish what you want.

Thanks for the info so far, predominantly want to view tenure layer, particularly forestry, private and crown land for access on a bike.

Have you used mapwel before?

I have used just about every chunk of mapping software over the years. Your problem will be that you need to be a bit geeky to work with these files and to get them showing up OK on the GPS (styles for different types of tenure etc). Online services using "live linking" to the LIST in Oruxmaps takes away all that hassle and you always have the latest version showing. Of course if you are out of mobile range then you need to do more "smoke and mirrors" work to get them onto the device for offline use.

Other programs to look at are MapC2MapC which allows you to grab an image (say from list), calibrate it and then turn it into a KMZ for Garmin GPS.

Lots of the programs get you 90% of the way to what you desire and then the last 10% is in a paid version of the product (ie load to GPS)

I have sent you a personal message with a sample of LIST extract to Google Earth that you can use in your GPS.
