Hi, I'm considering doin the OLT in May. Is it true, you don't pay the fee but it is busier because of this?
Also looking for anyone else keen to join me early May ?

Don't know about numbers, but you still have to book in May.
And be prepared for bad weather.

The overland track fee applies until the 31st. of May.

As the others have stated the fee will apply. Whilst I can't speak for the May / June period i'd imagine the weather will start to scare walkers off and numbers would drop off very quickly. Especially June as id imagine you would have to deal with snow.

I walked the track in the last week in September before fees started again and it was horrendous, the huts resembled youth hostels, I think we jammed 90+ into Windy Ridge hut. If I had my time again id pay the fee and walk the first week in October when numbers were very low.

Nah, go when it's knee deep in snow. Brilliant!
That's my plan this year, anyway. Of course, that probably means it won't snow up there all winter . . .

Yeh right, Sounds good, what's the best time for snow there roughly? I'm new to Tassie so not up to date with the season

Best time for snow is usually when it decides to snow heavily and/or persistently during July/August and maybe into early September, although there are never any guarantees. Snow in Tassie is very much a temporary maybe thing. Although last winter was really good.

Snow up on kunanyi this morning. Thought last night got rather nippy . . .

Yeah we went in winter a few years back (Aug) and we had a ball. Highly recommend it if your in for a bit of an adventure! Great fun for us folk who don't see snow very often but a tough slog if it does snow heavy

If contemplating the OT in winter of course make sure you are prepared for rain and/or snow. Provision for snow shoes is probably a good idea and perhaps make the call on the start day whether to bring (we got hammered with snow and could have done with snow shoes)

Have fun

Having walked it last week i have never seen the track wetter! Snow only an issue around Cradle Cirque and over Pelion Gap its all fun and recommend any time of the year. No such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. Have fun!
