Winterbrook falls old tramway track - Mysterious Devices

Mon 08 Aug, 2016 12:51 pm

Hi guys,

Walking along the old tramway track to Winterbrook falls recently (note that the road across bridge is still washed out), we noticed an abundance of these poly tubes with funnels on the top. There must be at least tow dozen of them scattered near the old flumes in the rainforest area.

Curious as to whether anybody knows what they are, they have 'Univeristy of Melbourne' written on the side of them - my guess is to catch king billy fronds for research?

They've been there since October 2014 at least, so must be ongoing monitoring. I assumed the same as you...always meant to find out. Until we come up with a better theory I think doogs is onto it...

I was told by somebody who was told by somebody who Should Know that they're for collecting seeds - from a specific species that eludes me at present. But I like doog's theory too. :)

Ah yes. Thanks, Micky B. Not a specific species, but all about 'synchronous variations in plant reproduction'.

I would love to take the credit Waif but it's another Michael doing the research.
