TIP: The online
Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I stocked up on boxer briefs during one of the Aldi sales recently only to discover to my horror that the short legs rolled up and they chafed like crazy on an overnighter. On a multi-day walk I reckon I wouldn't be able to walk without some serious vaseline "get-me-home" intervention wearing this style, or ditch the undies completely. I usually wear a Puma-brand of similar pattern to the Aldi ones and have no problems with them, but my four or five pairs of Puma "bushwalking" jocks are almost a decade old and now they are getting a little threadbare in places. Worst of all, I can't find replacements either online or in brick and mortar shops. I think they originally came from BigW?
I'm waiting on delivery of a pair of Under Armour heatgear compression shorts which appear to be a cross between my style of jocks and lycra bike shorts. I'm hoping that the extra leg length completely removes the threat of chafing and if this is the case I'll pick up a few more pairs for bush use.
What types of jocks do you rely upon for bushwalking?

Chafing... bummer. Would it help if you shaved your legs and crotch?
For what little it's worth (I realize you're just trolling for a silly set of responses) I wear good ol' Jockey classic cotton briefs, the same as I wear at home, same as I've worn for years. Some of the pairs are years old, actually. They're white as can be and have that stupid "Y" shaped hole in the front that I have never used but on occasion have gotten caught in, like an animal in a trap. In a big rainstorm I'll take them off and go camo since they are cotton after all. I take off my cotton T-shirt in really rainy weather too.

Having suffered from chafing in the past I know it can be a real pain. I have been using ExOfficio undies, both a short and long leg version but am changing over to Uniqlo Airism undies because of cost. I have had minimal chafing using both of these brands - only when bicycle touring recently. I found that when getting a bit of chaffing I use an antifungal cream and also found that when walking, a day or two of going commando helped.

I've found the Bonds Active Quickdry trunks really good - no chafing and dry really quickly.

Kmart Alpha Sports brand do a CoolMax fabric long leg trunk for a decent price. My biggest issue with chaffing is between the legs where my walking pants don't come up high enough and the skin rubs together.

Surely Bushman_Craig you would wear "trad" undies? No?

Would that be Y-fronts? Woollen shorts? Silk shorts?
Not trad, but I wear merino wool shorts from Macpac or Icebreaker.

Hahaha sad to say I own some "trad" vintage woollen boxer-style undies with button fly but they can be a bit itchy and I only use them on "Full Re-Trad" trips.

These are great to deal with chafing issues....not cheap, but they work

6" Under Armour when they're on sale...they last 2 or 3 seasons of hard yakka before the wide comfy elastic waistbands start to give.
Dry quick too.
I'll go out on a limb & say leech & tick proof too.

Yep, but in 9" (though I am 6'4").
They do develop a bit of a stink but such is life in the bush.

I have recently been using the cheap compression shorts from Aldi. For winter they are great. I haven't tried them during summer yet so can't report on warm/hot day performance.

Is there anything to be done about synthetic stink ? Synthetic boxers are way more comfortable and dry, but the smell is very noticeably more serious.

I've used the Exos for quite a while, and I don't notice them smelling particularly bad, but then again, it may be masked by some of the other clothing. (just got a MD shirt that got feral pretty fast) I like them pretty well, and use them for general travel since they dry quick.
Interested in the Airism ones, but didn't see them as available here in Aus, Mark F, where are you getting yours from?

Uniqlo seem to discontinue the line in winter but they are back on the web site. They appear in the Men --> Innerwear & Lounge --> Underwear section. The Men --> Innerwear & Lounge --> Airism section has various t-shirts.

A few years back I had a terrible chafing from riding up boxers but mainly because my pants and jocks were soaked. Walking in rain for the whole day without rainpants wasn't fun.
I now carry a small tube of Sudocrem which I've found to be great stuff it that happens again.
But I tend to have a pair of longer boxers when I know it's going to be wet, or if I'm river crossing/canyoning and going to be waist deep, I'll wear mid thigh compression shorts instead.

The Airism jocks and boxer briefs from Uniqlo are great. I usually take them for warmer weather walking, but found that they are great on wet days as well. And so light. A pair of mediums of the boxers is around the 45g mark.
As Mark said, they disappear from the website sometime during winter, but they are still sometimes in the stores.

+1 on the Kmart alpha cool max quick dry undies. I'm wearing mine right now! Easy to wash and dry

just ordered some to to try, a regular and a mesh, and a couple tees to get an idea of sizing. In my case since I'm in these conditions all the time, I like having the good stuff, but the exos are pricey enough to make me pause, and I missed the last massdrop since I was in europe.

I've been using these the last 6 months. The long legs don't roll up and you can't argue with the price.

Unfortunately I tried these 6 months ago and they caused me problems with chafing.Admittedly with what I do I stay wet all day.I changed back to my kathmandu quick dry somethings(not sure of name) with a bit of nappy rash ointment and I was fine for the next few days to finish off the trip.

Skins.
Not for compression, but find them perfect for long hikes and long trail runs. Spent up to 2 weeks in them and washing and drying is super quick on route.

Commando for me, even on day walks

Arc'teryx Men's Phase SL Boxer Short. I'm slightly overweight (82 kg for 1m74), so these help immensely. They're expensive but worth it. I hate short legged boxer briefs. They do exactly what you described. Avoid merino like the plague for this, tried some Icebreaker Merino briefs, it was a disaster on a long rainy day. I've found out that when I don't have a clean Arc'teryx pair of briefs to wear left, going commando is the next best thing indeed... I also always pack an anti chafing cream, but on my last journey hiking every day for 2 weeks in Canada I didn't need it because it was on average 5-6 hours walking per day. On long 8-9 h day hikes, it becomes necessary.

Long walks - tightfitting merino jocks - although the collection of black fluff can be alarming in the post walk shower
Shorter walks - cheap synthetic quickdrying bonds jox with aeration holes in them

Which cream do you use? And how long does it last?
Sun 25 Sep, 2016 9:12 pm
Akiléine sports Nok cream it's called but it's French I doubt you'd find it in Tassie. But any bike shop will have this type of cream, cyclists use it a lot. For the one I use, it lasts at least 9h as I haven't tried it for longer.
