Sorry for the thread dig.

We're planning on heading up to Lady Lake hut to overnight with our 11 month old little fella next month. Our itinerary has had to be reshuffled a bit because we neglected to check the Maria Island ferry times, so we're planning on coming down from the hut and driving to Triabunna for the 3pm ferry to Maria. Does that sound feasible? From what I've read, I reckon it'll be OK.

Also, should we take a litre of kero up with us for the heater/stove? The stove sounds great, but the latest thing I've read on it is from 2011, so it'd be good to know if it's still in action. Any other info about the hut/track would be appreciated too.

My wife's a bit anxious about taking our boy up there. Not because of the remoteness and all that; she's more worried that other campers might show up and be disappointed to find a baby there. I'm of the view that it's all part of hut camping. What do you reckon?

Your about a 3 hour or so drive to the ferry from up here so plan your departure from the hut to work that with your itinerary.

I cant help with the heater sorry.

Dont be concerned about taking your son up there. Taking your children out at a young age imho should be encouraged not frowned upon because they may bother other hut users. Take a tent as well though. Unlikely you will need it but we always carry a tent up this way.....just in case.

That's what I was just googling! Haven't confirmed it yet, but I'm fairly sure. Clearly we didn't use the heater. We did line dancing instead. :roll:

G'day Westcoastpete,

I was up at Lady Lake about 6ish wks ago.
There is a separate heater and stove, both use metho, and both still working fine.
I'd take 2lt if you can manage it.
There are instructions on lighting the heater, which make it seem more complicated than it actually is

The stove is great. The heater not so much. Ie, it doesn't produce a lot of heat. But maybe it's just that my expectations were too high.

Out of interest, we may have time to get on to Ironstone Hut at Lake Nameless. Does this also have a metho cooker?

Doubt it but I will have a look on Saturday. A herd of teenagers might be there next month celebrating a certain boys birthday with a little hike [PARTY POPPER]

No metho cooker at Ironstone hut. There is a small wood heater, but a dearth of good dry wood sources around the hut.

However, it's a great little hut and if you need heaters, then you aren't carrying enough decent gear. :-)

Agreed. More thinking of the cooking situation.

Thanks for the info though. Looks like we're going to make a break for Maria Island after Lady Lake hut. The accommodation is all full so we'll have to camp, but that should be fine.

The camping area at Maria Is is excellent. And there's a great BBQ & Toilet facility next to it (and showers!). Friendly wombats, and even Tassie Devils that come into the BBQ shelter for scraps (not native to Maria Is, though).
