Tasmanias High Country Huts

Sat 17 Aug, 2013 1:41 pm

I believe this excellent book written by Simon & Des has been around for a few years, it is back in the news so maybe an update or reprint,
(Maybe the first book was called, A High Country Heritage, correct me if I am wrong)

There is a new push for the preservation of Tasmania's mountain huts, with the launch in Launceston of an illustrated book.
Tasmania High Country Huts is a collaboration between historian Simon Cubit and artist Des Murray, who worked on the project for two years.
The book features 25 huts spread around Cradle Mountain, the Central Highlands, and the Walls of Jerusalem.
They were used to shelter trappers, hunters, graziers and miners and were often built in a hurry, using only the bare essentials.
Mr Murray says hours of painstaking work went into researching and capturing the huts.
"Every one of them has its own character, and that's what you try to catch, I find them exciting things to draw and to paint."
Some of the buildings are more than a century old and many are in danger of falling down.

Mr Cubit says it is hoped the book will renew interest in the preservation of a unique piece of Tasmania's heritage.
"These huts are very fragile, they're very precious, and they're very vulnerable," he said.

"The key motivation for all this was trying to help, well try to present a new generation of Tasmanians with information about these huts."

Book now in stock at my workplace (Fullers Hobart). Have managed to hold off buying one thus far - expect to be overcome shortly. :D

I haven't seen the earlier publication, but I believe this is a new and separate project.

Above is a link from 2009 by gorby where he talks about the Huts of the High Country Book.

gorby's quote
"I have just realised that I am a Hut bagger as well.
Even the old ruins of a hut or where it stood seems to have a certain mysticue (is that a word ) about the site.
Simon Cubit and Des Murray had a book called Huts of the High country that had a sketch and story about a heap of huts.
I have worked thru the book and have visited most of them and aim to finish this quest in the near future".

Hmmm - A High Country Heritage was published in 1988. Will have to pop into the library and have a squizz. At 46pp, it was certainly much shorter than the new volume. Will be interesting to see where other differences lie.

Yep, Overlandman is right, it's a comprehensive update of A High Country Heritage, with more huts, more (and updated) information and images by Des Murray. Really nice book.

Purchased a copy of this Fabulous Book and as a" Dedicated Hut Bagger" love it,not many in there that I have yet to visit .
My son as a 12 year old started doing pencil sketches of the the many huts we visited over the past 20 years and it was interesting to compare his efforts in a wee 8x11 cm note book to the excellent Des Murray illustrations, to my mind both much better than the photographs I took.

I attended the launch of this book in Launceston, and after dropping some hints, was "surprised" to receive it from my family as a Fathers Day gift. :D There was a good story and photo in the Examiner covering the launch.

Sad to see that Simon Cubit passed away on the 24th of May.
His memories will live on in the books he has written,
And the huts and mountains that he wrote about.
Sympathy to Simons family and friends.

A message from Simon's family:
Simon Cubit passed away peacefully this morning after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer. His loss will be felt deeply by his family and friends, as well as his loyal readership in Tasmania and further afield.
