1. You need far less equipment than you think. Attitude is everything. Push your personal boundaries.
2. There is no such thing as waterproof clothing. Skin however is waterproof.
3. Walking does not elevate you above others, it grounds you. You've been walking since you were 12 mths yr old and humans for many thousands of years.

Clipping your toenails is indeed important, I've had a few walks where I cut my toe skin because I forgot, or when I had what Americans call "canyon toe" when your toes (the nails in my case) hit your shoe repeatedly on long steep descents like in canyon.

+1 on keeping the toenails short. I also use “toe socks” to prevent the nail cutting into the adjacent toe.

Include small tube or supa glue in your first aid kit, pack some cable ties, and a length of (15m?) spectra or like cord for getting out of trouble but without any weight.

1. Anticipate twisting your ankle / spraining a muscle that slows you down significantly
2. Don't rush just to get back to the car before sundown - you won't enjoy the last leg and odds are you'll twist your ankle / sprain a muscle. If you're still out after dark, so be it (so pack a torch)
3. You won't think straight if you're dehydrated or worried about getting back in time so watch yourself for signs that you're thinking irrationally or you might end up rushing ... and spraining an ankle

An early start will make the day's walking easier.
Short breaks are better than long breaks.
Know how to use a map and compass.

3. The best GPS unit in the world with faultless "backtrack" function is a dog. True.

3b. Get a dog with a white tail. (Much easier to follow in the dark)

1. Put your phone into flight mode so that the battery lasts all weekend
2. What counts is not the difficulty of the scramble, but the consequences of a fall
3. It's satisfying to light the campfire with just one match and only natural kindling (no paper etc)
