Tolkienesque/Medieval style Tasmania maps

Hi all,

I've had a long time fascination with map's and map drawing, a hobby I have been doing since I was a kid. I finished one of Tasmania a while back (Map can be viewed here https://photos.app.goo.gl/v1R5WXzuUUkc7Kvn8); not designed to be detailed or practical map but it's purpose is rather to give off a certain exploratory aesthetic to Tasmania. The map details the names of all the major towns and cities, national parks, mountains and reserves. I want to do more of these maps for specific national parks and regions, detailing tracks, mountains and rivers; giving the Tasmanian wilderness a fantastic and enigmatic aura by presenting these lands with archaic embellished maps. My technique has improved since I made this map and I am keen to apply my new skills.

If you like this map and have any specific national park/wilderness reserve requests, I'd love to keep making them. As for as I'm concerned this map can be used by anyone for anything.

Cool. I imagine some conservation groups would be interested in this type of work. The Tarkine Wilderness would spring to mind, but lots of others too, for all sorts of reasons.

Yeah I thought of those too, I think I might do one of the Tarkine; I have no idea what it could be used for? I'd like to learn more artistic techniques for drawing miniature tree's and such. As you can see I tried to draw the forms of the more distinct peaks on the map,I'd like to do more of that for landmarks other than mountains and canyons.

You could create maps of the various “Great Walks” and iconic hikes around Aus and NZ.

People would probably be happy to pay for a hi-res memento. Alternatively they could print it on Tyvek and take it with them.

Yeah great idea, maybe I'll start with one of the overland track and then do some mainland/NZ ones. I've never heard of Tyvek? I'll have to check it out; thanks!

Yeah Biblical names are particularly epic, you really feel like your on a pilgrimage up there. I've decided i'll do a Cradle Mountain-Walls of Jerusalem synthesis map, because they fit together as a nice rectangle, perfect for a landscape A3 map. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yeah it would good to embellish it a little bit more; it would give it a bit more substance.

Perhaps you could dot in a few of the more well known trails?

Also higher res. Its a bit blurry when trying to read place names.

If you were able to segment this into say 4 maps and add in some trails it could be very useful for those who are not familar with tassie and want to walk there and learn the main regions where walks are.

For those with access to ArcGIS, somebody has written a style for ArcGIS Pro that will automatically make Tolkien style maps from your GIS data. hey thanks! yeah the map is only blurry and low res here as I had to compress it to upload it, I have a higher quality version it just needs to be compressed. I'm currently working on a Cradle Mountain - Walls of Jerusalem insert map, with a few of the major tracks dotted in. Thanks for the feedback!

Supposed to be fairly waterproof but I haven’t tested it myself.

My OCD can't quite cope with the Great Western Tiers being in the midlands and a lot of other prominent ranges / lakes being absent or just not quite where they should be.
Even if you say its the style, I look at the detail for specific mountains and it's just a bit too much artistic license.
