Spot on the Overland Track

Fri 08 Jan, 2010 8:20 am

I will be in the Cradle Mtn area and Overland Track from Sat 9th to Thursday 21st Jan carrying a SPOT 1 tracker. I have set up a shared page on "Spot Trip Manager" so our progress can be followed in real-time by family and friends. I have attached a link to the shared page for forum members to view if interested. Note that there will be nothing on the page (just a map of USA) until I first start Spot at Waldheim on Saturday afternoon.

Good luck. Just have them aware that it will give of locations at random time intervals and that it will send some from unusual locations. It will be at its best in the open country of the first few days. Has good novelty value for others to follow though.

Another SPOT track you can follow at the moment is Matt and John's 9 day trip in the Southern Ranges area.

Progress report - Matt and John are now a day behind schedule, as they had planned to climb PB today but have only just reached the campsite below PB on New River Lagoon.

Update - Matt and John this morning left their campsite (SPOT 38) on New River Lagoon below Precipitous Bluff, and have just arrived at Cockle Creek (SPOT 50) tonight via the South Coast Track :!: A solid effort with their pack rafts and considerable photographic equipment still on their backs 8)

Back home (NSW) now after a great couple of weeks in Tas. It was interesting to view our trip in hindsight via the Spot track. The unit sat in the top of my back-pack while walking and at the end of the day I found an open area - usually the helipad near the hut from where I sent the "OK" message. Yes, I agree it can be seen as merely novelty value but for my wife and I personally it was a chance to share our walk with our family who watched our progress with interest.

I went to the SPOT connection from Matts website and saw it started at Mt Sedgewick on the 25th Jan.
But no indication of the route he took into Sedgewick in the first place.

Just curious - was this a loop walk or did you walk through from another start point?

And does anyone know if there is public access to Lake Margaret yet?
