NOT REALLY A GAME: Where or what is this?/I might be lost

Postby beardless » Mon 07 Jan, 2019 5:51 pm

Have you ever looked through old photos and forgotten where you were when you took them?

Have you ever found a bunch of old slides of bushwalks from a relative but don't know what they depict?

Have you taken a photo of something that needs identification?

Are you actually lost and have taken a photo and have an internet connection and want some advice (which may not be correct) about how to find your way back to wherever you need to go?

This topic could be for those types of scenarios where the person posting the photo would like some identification information.

Admins please feel free to move to an appropriate sub forum or delete if you consider this is ridiculous

This is a great idea. I have sometimes found an old uncaptioned photo and been tempted to post it to the guessing competition page in the hope that someone else will identify it for me.

I actually did this once with a photo of my family when I was a kid. I knew which walk I had been on that trip, but I just couldn't fit what was in that picture with the correct location. Eventually Eggs solved it for me, and also pointed out that it was a mirror image. Turns out it had been scanned from a slide but the wrong way around, which was probably why I struggled to figure it out myself.

Thanks for starting this thread, beardless. Here's a photo that I'd like to have identified.

It's from 1987. I didn't take the photo, but was given it by someone who was on a trip with me.

It's most likely West MacDonnell NP, but it could also be Sturt NP. If it's West MacDonnell, perhaps it's looking southwards, across to the north side of the Heavitree Range, but what part? What do you think?

I cannot help with this one. You might have more luck (responses) if the moderators move this topic to the Game subforum or Bushwalking subforum. Can that be done easily moderators?

I too like the idea. Before this is set up there need to be a few points clarified.

The first one is the title. Second, there should be a sticky at the start explaining what the thread is about. Ideas and comments on both are sought. When this is decided to our satisfaction then the topic can be created. A link to that topic can be put in the last post of the topic you are reading now, and that topic can be locked.

How does that sound?

Sounds mighty fine. For a title, how about Sleuthing the Scenario?

On the etymology of the word sleuth, see:

ORIGIN Middle English (originally in the sense ‘track’, in sleuth-hound): from Old Norse slóth.

A few more name options would be nice.

For the record, I don't think the current subject line needs improvement.

Here's another one from the MacDonnell Ranges in 1987. I'd like to revisit this campsite. I've been back to the area a few times this year, and despite looking carefully haven't been able to identify the spot.

I think it's in Ormiston Creek, near where its north and east branches join (not far from where the Pound Walk crosses the creek nowadays). It's probably a short way up the east branch, or else on the north branch between the junction and Bowmans Gap.

The sloping rock at the left is quite distinctive, which is why I'm surprised I haven't been able to identify it. Of course, floodwaters may have significantly changed the ground level in the intervening decades. Wherever it is, it must be a day's walk west of the Mt Giles summit based on where we camped.

Ribuck, thanks. The topic is at
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=30144
I suggest that you post your pics there.

Beardless, thanks also. I have used the words in the first post as the introduction.

Just a note on identifying river beds.
This example is from Telowie Gorge in the southern Flinders - photos taken 5 years apart.
A lot can change in that time.
In particular - waterholes come and go.

I started with Ribuck, but returned when he went on.
In the course of traversing the East arm of Ormiston Creek I found his waterhole.
It's currently dry.
About 3 hours walk from base of Giles.
