Arm river track condition after heavy rain

Wed 07 Oct, 2020 10:19 am

Hi I had planned to walk to Pelion hut via the arm river track. Will there be any access issues after heavy rain? Thanks

You'll be fine... we walked out Sunday morning (4th Oct) after the initial hit of rain Saturday night and while there was a tonne of water coming off the hills and across the track in places, at no point will it prevent access. Bridges etc. are all in the right places.

You might end up with very wet feet though ;-) I'll have to post up some pics. Have never seen the creek levels so high on the ART.

Cheers, Ben.

I have walked in twice after heavy rain and the bridge over Douglas creek was under water. Just getting to it was scary as staying on the boardwalk was difficult in knee deep fast flowing water. Then it was a knee to waist deep wade down to the hut with the odd plunge to chest depth.

Wow. Ok yeah so Sunday probably wasn't as bad as it gets then. There was about 6" of space under the Douglas Creek bridge... maybe the same under the Wurragurra Creek bridge.

Forgive the bad quality - screen grabs from videos my better half posted on FB...

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I've always wondered if it floods very often ? Had a very sketchy walk many years ago in the rain.

Like most Tassie watercourses, Douglas Creek rises quickly and drops fairly quickly once the rain stops. I've always found the short crossing at the trackhead to be a good indicator of what the inner crossings will be like, provided one takes account of prevailing weather.

yeah, that's deep enough, they can get awfully slippery too with ice or snow, edit: especially the older one on Wurragarra Ck, not a walk for young players after winter rains

I'd like to see this harnesses unclipped on crossings like that too folks!! Safety first.
