Cathedral/Montagu Thumbs/Wellington Falls

Wed 07 Oct, 2020 8:16 pm

Hi all
With the recent addition of a small human I’m attempting to keep the peace by making the most of day walks close to home. Looking to do the Cathedral/Montagu Thumbs/Wellington Falls circuit this weekend. Any thoughts on whether the two crossings of NW Bay River will pose a problem given recent, and tomorrow’s forecast, rainfall? I’ve been up this way before but never crossed the river.
Cheers

Yes I suspect it will be a problem.

Being high up in the catchment area the water will pass through quite quickly after a rain event. So when you say 'this weekend' there will be a big difference between Saturday and Sunday. Also keep an eye for the rain totals on the BOM website for Kunanyi to aid your decision.

Thanks for the thoughts folks. Looking at Sunday at this stage. Appreciate that high up in small catchments the pulse generally comes through and returns to normal quickly. So will keep an eye on the rainfall totals today and tomorrow. Hard to predict what we'll get with this NE weather, bit unusual.

Disappearing Tarn might be back too!

The crossing above the falls can get very slippery. You might find a safer point to cross further upstream but from memory there are some pretty large and very cold rock pools. As others have said its best to keep an eye on the kunanyi rainfall.
