TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

One Planet Canopy - offtrack gem?

Wed 02 Dec, 2020 9:34 pm

Checking out the new? Canopy from one planet.

Its lightish.. at 1.45kg for 50L and they are now offering optional goodies such as hip belt pockets. :)

Looks decent for offtrack adventures where the pack would get bashed around a bit.

Have they made their water bottle pockets angled? (always loved that osprey feature) They seems a bit different to the old OP style.

anyone own one?

These light weight packs aren't much good for off track walks in my experience. Scrub and rock makes short work of them.

OP has some new lighter weight packs due for release very soon.

Canopy should still be available, but as they are currently marked as out of stock, waiting for a little while way to see what comes may be helpful.

330D Cordura was the fabric for the Canopy -sold out reasonably quickly. I wonder how the 330D Cordura is faring?
There's clearly off track and then there's off track, though I would reckon 330D would be fine for most off track, for most of the people, most of the time?
Cordura seems very tough stuff.
I would like OP to maybe fine tune (lighten) the harness and add a roll top-the 'top compartment' situation they have now can be unwieldy-and then they could easily get something in the 1.1kg range to compete with the money being sent overseas.
Two canopies -made from both a lighter fabric and a heavier one may be the play of the day. Most companies do it now-money in the bank.
I know of someone on BW.com with a Canopy -whether they will see your request WW I'm not sure.

There's an OP traverse pack for sale in the bw.com market at the moment.

Thanks all,

330D cordura seems fairly tough. I do some fair bush bashing on occasion and my pack hasn't holed yet.. and it's 100d nylon! But I do have to be careful with it. I can't just go charging through.. and my skin is thankfull.

Looking for that happy medium between lightweight delicacy and industrial weight behemoth.

Will be interested to see what new options OP come out with. Good to support ozzie companies when possible too.

330d cordura is quite robust. I've had no issues with X-Pac VX 21 or gridstop bush bashing, both of which are lighter fabrics.

Regarding OP harnesses.

I have and have had the Exact Fit, also the lighter current Exact Fit Mid. My carried weight nowadays usually doesn't exceed 11/13kg, but on occasion can go 15/16. Any more is too much for me nowadays.

The Exact Fit Mid is as light as I would like to go. It's very comfortable and with the new L/W pack options having a bit more capacity (up to 60L for a claimed 1.5kg), that harness offers a lot of flexibility. I have also used the predecessor to the Exact Fit Mid, and although the two appear very, very, similar visually the later harness is a significant improvement.

I have tried on various light framed thingies with open mesh belts and straps and wire frames. Uncomfortable and poor compromises between equipment weight and getting the job done.

I have a Canopy. Very pleased with it.
I am not typically an off track walker though, so can't comment on its application for that purpose.
