TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

What Lens to take

Postby farkewie » Tue 23 Feb, 2010 8:14 pm

Hi,

I have recently purchased an entry level DSLR and completed a photography course (entry level) I know enough to leave it on manual and still have decent photos.

I am doing the south coast track next week and am going to purchase a slim carry bag for it. I was wondering what lens I should take. Right now I only have the lenses that came with the twin lens kit. 18-55 and 50 - 200.

I wont be purchasing any other lenses just yet really just looking for some advised from the more experienced photographers and what you would recommend taking as a beginner (if you can remember back that far :-) )

I was only going to take one as I didn't want the hassle of looking after lenses while changing them just yet as it is my first long walk as well.

Thanks in advance
farkewie

If you are not going to buy another one I would take the 18-55. I also have both (18-55 & 55-200) and had them both with me on walks, just never really used the 55-200. I then had a 18-125 which was really good for bushwalking but the image quality was not the best and now it's broken, so I use the 18-55 again but I'm also looking for something new to replace the 18-125

hi samh
(assuming you are speaking Canon here - please disregard if not)
I've recently purchased a 18-135 IS, which seems to be performing very well thus far (yet to carry it on a big walk though)... but gives the best of both worlds.
Cheers
Kramster :)

No I'm talking Nikon, and thought farkewie does too.
