TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Notch Li versus Stratospire Li

Tue 25 May, 2021 7:00 pm

I'm thinking about getting a DCF tent in my attempt to keep doing some harder walks. I got to see a Stratospire Li in person (Thanks! ), and was a bit surprised how high off the ground the fly pitches. No wonder it can be more breezy than the Scarp. Does anyone know if the Notch Li can be pitched closer to the ground than the Stratospire? Zapruda, I vaguely think you may have used both.

Ta for any info on this.

I haven’t used the Strat but I’ve been a long time Notch user.

The fly doesn’t pitch to the ground, well at least the vestibules don’t. It’s never been a problem for me. I’ve had it on snow quite a few times as well without much spindrift coming through. Probably less of an issues with the solid inner.

The newer version of the Notch Li seems to come a little closer to the ground than the 2018 design.

Excellent tent though.

And I can't quite figure out if Tarptent ships directly to Australia or not. I thought someone mentioned using a shipping service, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

They’ll ship directly to Aus with either UPS or USPS no problems. I always opt for UPS. It’s quicker and more reliable.

Thanks again, Zapruda. :D

My shipping experience with TT was positive for my recent purchase. It arrived in Australia and cleared customs within 3 days of posting from Seattle...then from Sydney was supposed to go to my local big sorting centre in Newcastle. It went to Melbourne instead, then took 11 days to travel the 200km from Sydney to Newcastle. Crazy. So in any case, TT postage carriers are reliable, Australia Post is the weakest link

Thanks, Muddy. I'll order when I can - during my faffing about, they went out of stock.

Not a bad thing, faffing.
Gives more time for pondering before pulling the trigger.

Hope things are well in your world, without sounding like a stalker, I think of you often.

True. I've started to wonder if the Notch Li is wide enough on the ends to allow for an X therm on lumpy ground... Thinking back to the Dan Durston 1P - but I want a solid inner. And DCF sounds wonderful.... And Dan may not ever make a 1P DCF Xmid with solid inner. And maybe the Strat Li 2P could be pitched with the fly lower to the ground... If only WE decided to make a DCF 2nd Arrow! :?

Nah, not creepy. :) Likewise, I'm reminded of you as I sit here in one of the jackets I use all the time, that I got from your very generous bag of clothes. :D And I think of you as I think of young 'uns benefiting from kids clothes you donated. Just waiting to meet you in person!

Yes, I hope to share a cuppa with you sometime in the next year or two!

If only you could custom design your own tent. I wish it were possible. I would go XMid 1p, as a hybrid single wall in DCF. Or as you say, 1.5p. Perfecto!

Wonder if someone clever could play around with the XMid inner? As in chop it up/make a partial solid portion on it? Or emulate the dimensions in your own fabric specs. Would be a bit naughty if doing it for profit, but for personal use surely not too bad.

Does anyone have a Notch close to you in Tas?

Solids weigh more than mesh... at least at anything like a reasonable price.

I'm thinking of making something like a protrail .. but side entry. And as it is DIY, I'll have 2 separate inners - mesh and solid. Not in DCF ... at least not yet, see how it goes first.

Yay! Or even a walk, if I'm not too slow for you.

I've thought about that. Trouble is, without doubling up fabric, you'd have to redo a lot of the seams of the inner, which gets into more complex stuff. I know someone that has added some fabric to her Xmid 2P, which has improved its function in cold climes, but of course has added a bit of weight.

I forgot to ask! Anybody in the N or NW got a Notch LI?

True, but with the Notch Li, the semi-solid inner is 4 grams lighter than the mesh inner.
