NSW topo maps on DVD?

Postby davidmorr » Mon 29 Mar, 2010 11:01 pm

I've got a collection of NSW topo maps going back 25 years, more than 100 of them. Most survived flooding in 2007 with not too much damage -just a few coloured mildew spots. (The newest edition with the shiny paper didn't - they all stuck together and couldn't be separated like the older ones could be.)

Now I know topo features don't change much, but sometimes it is useful to know of new man-made features like roads. And I am still buying maps for new areas. If they get wet, they are going to be useless. I have been thinking of an electronic version so I could just print out a new copy when necessary. (I don't use a GPS.)

Today I saw Memory-Map in a map shop. All NSW topo maps (and lots of other useless junk - Windows Mobile version, for instance) on one DVD for $249. Seems pretty good value - would pay for itself in 25 maps. And presumably can print out those awkward spots on the corner of four maps on just a single sheet. I would prefer to leave out the junk though, and save some money.

Is there any other way to get NSW topo maps in electronic form?

Hi,

I recently asked the Sales section of the NSW Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA) -
the same question. This was their response:

Topoview = two DVD set covering all the 1:25,000 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 across NSW, as per the (2008 NSW Topographic Map) catalogue.
Retails for $275.00 plus $11.50 postage.

Details:
Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA)
PO Box 143
Bathurst NSW 2795
Ph 02 6332 8123
Fax 02 6332 8299

There are free (for non-commercial use) versions available of the NSW 1:25000 and 1:100000 maps. These are not as good as the versions that come on the topoview DVDs as they have been derived from the LPIs free on-line mapping server. You can download them from:
http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=5. I think you need to be a member to download, but it is worth it as this site is full of really useful info about GPS. Also note near the top of this page the link to the "NSW Topo DVD list". This use to be an active list of people prepared to mail DVDs to each other for copying. Don't know if it still active though, you may need to post in the forum to see.
http://maps.festy.org/downloads/ozi/NSW/. This is the website of the guy who created the mapset. Please note only the individual 1:25000 maps link works.

IMPORTANT - these maps have been created and calibrated to work with Oziexplorer only. Oziexplorer is a good program and you can download a trial version which will allow you to give oziexplorer a FREE try with the FREE maps from the above links.

Hope this helps,
Michael.
