Web Mapping Platform & UTM reference

Mon 06 Jun, 2022 4:50 pm

Hi all - sorry if this is a very basic question, but a quick web search didn't come up with an easy solution.

If I have a UTM map reference (e.g. UTM 55H 664548-6066035 (MGA94) - so that is based on a previous Australian UTM projection).

Is there a simple way of either 1) directly putting that into a current online mapping platform (e.g. Google Maps); or 2) converting it to the map projection used by current mapping platforms?

There seem a few issues ... converting to a current map projection, converting from an Australian projection to an internationally used projection (by the web platforms), and having the right format (e.g. degrees minutes). But I could be wrong.

Thanks for any help / guidance

If you use GoogleEarth Pro then you can just paste in '55H 664548 6066035' into the search box and it will find the location

Some state mapping portals (like LISTMAP in Tasmania) also allow searching by coordinates separated by commas.... 507932,5352872

Yep, thanks, that's the place. A cleared helipad in the Namadgi National Park. Didn't work in Google Earth, so I'll try the Pro download.

Thanks. Unfortunately, it didn't work on NSW SIX Maps, at least not using 664548,6066035. Not even sure if that's a standard coordinate.

I was able to transform the co-ords you gave at this website: https://epsg.io/transform#s_srs=32755&t ... 35.0000000 . Appears to have worked: https://www.google.com/maps/place/35%C2 ... 48.8150422

Under the "Output coordinates" is a button to change the format of the output.

Cheers,
Michael.
