Taking home-dehydrated meals to NZ

Wed 07 May, 2025 5:55 pm

Does anyone have any recent experience in taking home-dehydrated meals from Oz to NZ? I can only find posts that are 10+ years old. All my meals will be vegan. Would like to know if these will be OK as far as customs is concerned.

Ahead of a bushwalking trip to NZ, I purchased some NZ-made commercial dehydrated meals and had them sent to me in Australia.

I repacked the meals into vacuum-sealed bags to reduce their bulk, which is where I made my big mistake.

Because the meals were no longer sealed in their original packaging, including country of origin and contents, they were all confiscated on my arrival in NZ.

I had to shop again in NZ for the same meals in their original bulky packaging.

I'd caution against taking any plain packaged food items into NZ.
