Wildlife Seen on Your Last Walk?

Can someone tell me what animal this is (was)? I assume it is a carnivore from the teeth. Approx size: 220 - 300ml end to end.

Do you have more photos? My first guess would be wombat. compare here.

No I haven't figured out what it is yet, although, that wombat skull looks similar in shape. The only thing that causes me doubt is the teeth. I wish I had taken more photos (or brought it home) but I didn't.

Have you found out what the skull is yet? You could email the pic to the National Museum for ID.

It'd be funny if you did and they just emailed you back to say it was a sheep!

I think perhaps a wallaby? The skull shape (particularly the eye socket area) and teeth look very similar.

I couldn't find a Bennetts Wallaby skull but here's one from a rock wallaby:

Hello All

My story relates to a wombat as well. While walking on Maria Island a couple of years ago, we came across a wombat. I said to the guy who was with me for us to stand still and see what happened. Well what did surprised us both! The wombat sniffed the air a couple of times and then walked towards us. To make a long story short, it came right up to us, sniffed my friend and then moved over to me, and licked my leg! Dave took a photo and this spooked it and off it went into the bush beside the track. An amazing encounter I reckon.

Just thought of a somewhat funny (!) experience on our Jan 07 OT trip. We stayed at the 'cosy cabins' campsite the day before our walk and filled in the spare half day we had with a walk to Cradle Mt summit. We stopped into the visitors centre on the way and ran into a group of rather excitable overseas tourists who were about to set off for a day walk to dove lake.

We completed our hike and came back via the ronny creek carpark and ran into one of the tourists, an American lady who was sitting beside a small tarn about 10 metres from the boardwalk in a very distressed state and yelling for help. Thinking the worst (i.e. broken limb) we left the boardwalk and trudged over to her and found her covered in at least 20-30 leeches. She was wearing shorts and a t-shirt so her legs, arms and face were basically covered in them. After calming her down a bit she explained that she was 'fossicking' and had no idea there were leeches there. By this stage the bus driver on the shuttle had noticed the hubbub and took the lady back to the visitors centre for some leech removal attention.

Funny thing was when she was walking off with the driver she started shouting at him that no one from the visitors centre had warned her there were leeches! and that there should be warning signs everywhere!

This wedge tail eagle landed in a tree not far from me on the Arm River Track and then watched while I took a few photos. Not sure if he was sizing me up for lunch.

Cave spiders are really nice my closest encounter was in one of the small caves at Redwater Creek and from memory it was carrying its sac of babies which made it look bigger.

Corvus, like "ripe", you need to choose your words more carefully.
I can't think of one thing that is "nice" about it. Apart from being one of God's creatues and all that...

A huntsman at home on the bed a while back, the wife was in the bed. I said "don't move & don't look"... Luckily she didn't and I could remove that one. Could have been ugly.

The whole article is pretty interesting, but of note,

the cave spider, which is found only in Tasmania and has many unusual characteristics.

One of these is its courtship and mating, which can take up to six hours.

The male must spend hours wooing the female, seductively tapping her on the head with one of his legs.

He aims to get her in a "tight embrace", using legs specifically shaped for this task, while avoiding being bitten.

"If she hasn't eaten for long enough she will have a go at eating him", Dr Doran said.

Unlike most spiders, which make a vertical web, Hickmania troglodytes spin a horizontal mesh which snares insects that fall from the cave roof. Occasionally it will jump up and down on the web to find out whether an insect has been captured.

The spider, which can grow to a leg span of 18cm, is found mainly in caves, including Mole Creek and Mt Wellington systems, but also in rainforests and mine shafts.

Its origins date back more than 200 million years.

Over the Christmas break I took a walk for a few days in the Blue Mts. and saw quite a lot of wildlife. Numerous kangaroos and wallabies of various descriptions. Wombats, some quite light in colour. Eagles soaring on the thermal current off Crafts Wall. Glossy black cockatoos. Goannas. Black snakes. Trout. Eel. What have you seen out there lately?

While walking around Dove lake a Tiger snake sunning itself on the boardwalk, it was reluctant to move so I could pass. While sitting at Furgies campground chatting to a German guy this wombat strolls past as though we were not there. I woke after a disturbance to find a possum in the vestibule scavenging for food so I moved him on only to hear the people in the tent near me doing the same so this possum was doing the rounds.

A quoll at the Lake Vera hut at Frenchmans, tried to steal my lunch! It was wandering around us for at least 45mins, very tame.

The biggest, fattest echidna I have ever seen half way up Quamby Bluff last Friday. He was a real porker! But then again he probably went home and relayed a similar observation to his family about a bush walker he saw that day...
