SPRATS

Thu 16 Jul, 2009 8:58 am

I thought a few remote area walkers might be interested in the SPRATS program run by Wildcare. An opportunity to get to some remote west coast areas removing sea spurge. They are currently seeking expressions of interest for next season.

Thanks Phil, that looks like a great thing to do.

Yes, if you can spare the time it is a great way to get into that area. I've taken part in the last two seasons and really enjoyed the experience. The first year I didn't know anyone else involved and I was a bit nervous about how I would go. But I was put into a team of 8 and we got on really well together. I recommend it to anyone who is self sufficient with the gear and can organise their own food for the week or two (depending on what sector they go to). I am putting in to go again this summer.

Hi all,

The info packs for next summer's SPRATs program have just come out. I did a 2 week stint last year between Pennerowne Pt and Birthday Bay - the weeding was hard work but the scenery was stupendous! I wasn't all that confident about my ability to bushwalk for two weeks, but we were base camped for almost a week so the weight wasn't an issue. While we managed to pull about 16,000 spurge plants per person over the period, we also fit in 1 1/2 days off to do a bit of fishing, lying in the sun, etc.

I tried to attach the info pack to this posting, but it seems that PDF's aren't allowed. If you're interested visit the SPRATs page on the Wildcare site http://www.wildcaretas.org.au/pages/groups_details.php?group_id=71&group_type_id=1 and send an email to the contact there.

I highly recommend it. :D

Done SPRATS for the last 3 years. Great way to go see a different part of the State.

SPRATS options include sections which are hard bush walks to sections where you camp in one spot and weed around that area.

Look forward to meeting you on the next one.
