HEC Huts in South West Tasmania

Postby Luuk Veltkamp » Sat 10 Jul, 2010 4:42 pm

Just wondering if there are any intrepid explores out there who have been to the following HEC Huts (See attached Google Earth Attachment) These 5 Huts are reasonably unknown and all very remote. There has been some damage to some in recent times so I am keen to see any recent photos to document these huts before they fall apart completely. Some of them are still full of HEC supplies and equipment left abandond from the 1960s and are true time capsules!

-Albert Rapids Hut
-Splits Camp Hut
-Nicholls Range Hut (Denison Camp)
-Olga Hut (sunshine gorge)
-Davey River Hut

Love to see photos from anyone who has ever ventured to these parts, in particular the Albert rapids hut which has so far eluded me completely!

Regards

Luuk

Interesting.

Not sure if I'm doing somthing wrong but the kmz only ssems to have the Albert Rapids Hut in it.

There are also some bits and pieces under The Thumbs at the northern end of the Bombardier Track where the Huntley Rivulet runs into the Gordon River. The 25k map shows pylons of a disused aerial cableway. The cable was still there in 2007.

Hi

I just Check the file, sorry, not sure why it did that, should work now!

The cable way you mentioned in the remains of the Gordon River above Huntley Rivulet Hut that was destroyed by fire (arson) and not rebuilt as the Albert Rapids was next on the list!

I have attached a new KMZ file!

Let me know if it works

There is a good map in the book 'Tickleberry Tales' by Heather Felton. As well as the camps on the Gordon River it also shows the ones associated with the Franklin River. There is also a picture from 2005 of the Olga Camp.

kmz file works nicely. thanks.

this link may be of interest. it is a search on the National Library of Australia for photos by Russ Ashton. If the link doesn't work then you could always do the search youself. There are 812 photos.

Yeah thanks, I have used these photos to pinpoint some of the huts, a great historical resource! Another interesting link is:
