TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Review of gear used on Overland Track

Wed 30 Apr, 2008 10:05 pm

I finished walking the Overland Track about a week ago.
Here is a run down of some of the new gear I had with me and what my thoughts on it are.

Gaiters - OR Crocodiles - http://www.outdoorresearch.com/site/m_s_crocodiles.html
Great gaiters, very breathable and comfortable. I managed to bend a buckle after sliding down a rockface, bent it back fine later that night.

Poles - Leki Ultralite Ti COR-TEC - http://www.moontrail.com/leki-ultralite ... -poles.php
Very light, very compact. Good swing weight. The cork grips worked well. I found that using 1 pole worked best for me.

Tent - Hilleberg Kaitum 2 - http://www.moontrail.com/hilleberg-kaitum.php
All in all we only used it 2 nights. On the OT the wildlife is very tame and I was getting sick of possums diving in to the vestibules. The tent performed well. We had mild condensation on both nights. It was very cold, probably about 5 deg C when we woke up. The second night we closed the vents which is why there was condensation, I think if I used it for 1-2 weeks straight I could work out a good ventilation method. As far as tent materials go, it was great. Very solid construction and there are a few little things in the engineering and build that are nice, 1 way poles, good sized vestibules etc. It was very packable, I had it wedged between my clothes bag and my sleeping bag at the base of my pack (Macpac Ascent XPD - about 75L) and I had no issues with the weight, at 2.8kg it was pretty light.
As far as interior space goes there is plenty and it's very liveable. If I was to use it as a base camp tent (2-3 weeks or longer) I might consider the K3 because the weight difference is virtually non existant. My previous tent was an MSR Hubba Hubba and the Kaitum feels like a palace compared to it.

Stove - Trangia 27-1 with gas adaptor - http://www.trangia.se/english/
I've had the Trangia for a while but I only recently switched it to gas.
It worked well, the gas adaptor was quick and easy to set up and it stores well inside the Trangia.
I'll be using it permanently from now on instead of metho.
A 230gm gas canister lasted us 5 days without being too conservative.

Hi Danien, thanks for the sale of the OR gaiters. They were great when I did the OT. We went down there just after the big storm and the snow was knee deep and they performed really well. Thanks again , Steve c

Thanks Damien, I've been looking forward to hearing how you went with the tent.
I look forward to hearing more of your walk in an appropriate topic when you have time. Trust it went well for you?
Where were you on 2nd April? We had some pretty shocking weather then.

Hi Brett,

I can't recall the exact amount I paid but I think it was $890.00. Moontrail have excellent customer service and they shipped it next day. It was sent via UPS instead of the USPS as I needed it before I went on the OLT. It took about 5 days to get here from memory. Also have a look through the 'bonus points' scheme on Moontrail, you can end up with some cool free stuff or use the bonus points to take money off your order, I ended up using mine to reduce the shipping price.

I can highly recommend the Kaitum due to all the features stated above. If you want a copy of the review from BackpackingLight PM me and i'll email it through.
Also, in regards to the K2 vs the K3, the K2 is perfect for what I want it for, it fits both myself and my girlfriend and all our gear comfortably. If you want a 'base camp' type tent or if you go hiking or climbing with a couple of mates the K3 would probably suit you a bit better as it gives you that flexibility and it only weighs another 200g (which is 4 mars bars..).

If you have any other questions just post them below or PM me.

Damien
