TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Scarp1 - big enough for two?

Wed 25 Aug, 2010 5:09 pm

Title pretty much says it all ;) Thinking about a new tent to get the weight down and wondering what "1+" means in the real world?

1+? Hmmmmm Im guessing you'd have to be close to the sharing person. Especially given some 2man tents i've been in.

I think the 1+ means that if you take out the internal walls it will "fit" two.

My Scarp 1 is very nice and roomy for ONE and would fit two in an emergency however it is a one person tent check out the dimensions here.

Official version...
In TT speak 1+ means that it is a solo shelter that can accommodate 2 in an emergency or a close couple...
With the Scarp if you undo the outermost clip on each side of the top, the floor drops to about a 5 cm height (from about 13cm) so that you can fit two mats inside.

Thanks for the replies :)

I might measure up the existing tent and compare; doesn't matter too much if it's a bit of a squeeze - if two mats fit then should be fine. The alternative is that we could stick with our current tent for two-person walks - though I'd probably go for a Moment in that case. Decision, decisions!

Well, a year on I've finally ordered, received and seam-sealed my Scarp1 - premier voyage will be some cycle touring in France next month 8)

I don't think space will be a problem for us, the second vestibule will certainly help.

I've got pitching more or less figured out, but am a bit confused about the anchor points on the bottom of the floor - are they meant to be attached to anything?

Henry loves to put added loops and bits and then not tell anyone what they are for.
Those anchor points were not in the original version and neither were in the first few batches of the new fly version, so they are not covered in the instructions.

A couple of uses for them.
One you can pull the floor back to that point and insert a peg there to give you temporary extra vestibule area ( for that activity that should ever be mentioned, cooking inside the tent...)

The other is to set the inner up by itself using the standard pole.
The tensioning strap (from pole tip to pole tip) is attached to the fly , so you need to make one up to replace that .
I used a pair of glove hooks to take the pole tip.

But if you just want some extra view you can also do this :

I presumed they were used to peg the floor down to stop a bit of drifting from the silnylon floor when on slopes, I've done this once in an tentsite that had a bit of sideways drift and it helped.

Yes you can do that as well and possibly that was the main reason for putting those loops there.
I did ask Henry when a member here asked about them some time ago but now I forget his explanation...

Thanks Franco and SBS, I'm loving how versaile this shelter is - and I haven even slept in it yet

Don't think I'll be cooking in the vestibule, at least not with my leaky attempts at soft drink can stoves - but might have to pick up a mesh inner when I order my next TT. The half-fly configuration looks good for stargazing...

For the very little extra weight Scarp 2 is Palatial for one and roomy for two and you could squeeze in three Adults if pushed or Mum ,Dad and a littlie with ease.
I guess my Scarp 1 will become redundant now :D
