Bushwalker transport??

Mon 25 Oct, 2010 3:06 pm

Seriously why is it so difficult to get to bushwalks in Tassie?? It is ok if you are travelling in a group and can charter a service but for the solo traveller it is pretty painful trying to find reasonable options. Was thinking of heading up to Lake Oberon (WA's) mid Nov but that seems too hard, then thought I'd try WOJ- again no easy options. The only destination is the OT but wanted something different..... even in via Arm River- but once again no transport.... am I missing something? Makes NZ more tempting once again.... such a shame. You locals are very lucky

Sadly because of supply and demand - it is not commercially viable so no one provides a service. Simple as that.

Lob a message into this forum as some others might also be having the same issues or you might find a local going the same way.

I'd offer my services, but my car isn't exactly fuel efficient, so a charter would probably be around the same price. You should probably put this post in the Find Companions/arrange transport section. You never know, someone could be heading out that way.

Also I am planning a trip to Frenchmans on November 10, if you were around at that time I could give you a lift to Lake St Clair, there you have the option of the Labyrinth, or you could go to the King William Range, or Frenchmans.

I'm doing the DuCane range on the 23rd of november with a friend , But I've organised the bus to Lake St Clair and walking in on the Overland Track.

But hey, Lizzy, I feel your pain. I find It takes alot of effort, research and timing to get to the places you want to walk in Tassie especially if you don't reside there;

best of luck.

Worth considering putting the car on the spirit and sailing down. Solves a lot of Transportation hassles and by the time you add up all the extra transportation costs getting around locally it might not work out costing that much more.
That assuming you live somewhere near Melbourne and have a car and are coming for a reasonable amount of time.

Ahhh too many asssumptions Azza- but yes I have considered bringing the car across. Unfortunately it would add a bit too much time as I would have to drive down from Sydney and my leave pass from my littlies at home is limited... but if I had abit more time up my sleave would definitely do that for convenience if nothing else.

Yes, I've gone through all these calculations also when planning for the WA's. Found it was worth driving down to Melbourne and taking the Spirit across and I live near Coffs Harbour! Julie

Tassie has a list of bushwalker transport operators as good as NZ, who provide private charter services to just about anywhere. If you are a single traveller then the cost might be just too much, however it might be worth checking if they have confirmed group departures allready. You can jump on and share the cost. A Launceston oneway trip to the Walls or Arm River tracks for two walkers might cost around the $220 mark. Here are the operators:

North

Tiger Wilderness Bushwalkers Bus 0363943212 - http://www.tigerwilderness.com.au/bush
Outdoor Recreation Transport - 0363918249 http://www.outdoortasmania.com.au/
Sainty's Coaches - 03 63346456 - http://www.saintyscoaches.com.au/index.html

South

Evans Coaches - 03 6297 1035 - http://www.evanscoaches.com.au
Tasmanian Wilderness Experiences - 03 6261 4971 http://www.twe.travel/05_transport/01.html

Leethal mentions Evans Coaches.

I just wanted to add that Evans provided me and my wife with excellent service on a pickup from Lune River earlier this year (where the circumstances made the exact date and time difficult to know in advance), and that they'd also been extremely helpful in the related planning we'd been doing from a distance (we live in the UK).

Their service was great - and a really good advertisement for Tasmanian hospitality. The OP could do worse than to get in touch with them to discuss possibilities: even if they can't do a particular trip themselves for an affordable price (e.g. if it's to the north of the state) they should be able to give good advice on the options.

It would be very helpful if some of these services would post here on the "Specials, Discounts, Adverts" forum. I reckon they would pick up a lot of business without having to spend a cent on advertising, and we'd have ready answers for all the people who keep posting asking about transport options. :-)

That's a really good idea Nik!

Has anyone in the position to do so, actually offered them the privelige?

Ciaran & Nik,

After reading your comments I loaded a blurb about my bushwalkers transport business into the advertising index. Just checked if it made the grade and it looks like it's been accepted. I was offered earlier this year to submit some info. I appreciate the opportunity, it's a two way street you know, I have links from my website to this bushwalkers blog. Links on my quotes too, so I know some of my customers have signed-up and contribute here.
