Tourism Tasmania.....

Ok, so Ive had my own dealings (or lack of) with Tourism Tas. Perhaps weve heard the reports of their competence?

So Im looking at the Tasman Penn walking track page on the Parks site. I see a mention of 'guided tours' all good, think ill take a quick look. I see its the Tourism Tas site, hesitate, but then when I see it loading a new website im thinking perhaps it will be a less frustrating exercise this time.


It links to the home page (guess parks couldnt waste time linking to the Tasman page either). So I go through the search process, try the region search, try the activity search no luck. Type in Overland Track, (hmmm what region would that be....) anyhow, maybe ill get an idea of how the search function is working...Overland Track (general search) no result

So, assuming im a numpty, or even a tourist. Where the &^%@# is the info? I probably wont try again for another four years. How bout a game?

Use the link: http://www.parks.tas.gov.au/index.aspx?base=2271 to get back to the home page, time how long to find a guided walk on the Tasman..... any particular guided walk in fact...

Im probably setting myself up for a fall, my server is likely as slow as my IT abilities (hmm perhaps we only get IT tourists?)

My thoughts (at this stage) are of these guys partnering parks for the Tasman proposal

Well... Linking to the home page rather than the content is actually best practise as the home page is much less likely to move than the individual resource. The Discovertasmania search is a bit weird, you need to use the 'keyword search' on the right, the location search is restricted to the categories of 'activities' and 'accomodation'. Useful for tourists perhaps... Doing a keyword search for "guided walks", the first result was this page which links to http://www.greatwalkstasmania.com/ (as well as http://bushwalk-tasmania.com/forum/ - should tell 'em to update their link to the new URL ), which in turn lists seven guided walks in Tas. None of 'em on the TP though, so maybe someone at PWS has their wires crossed.

OK perhaps not related to your post nuts but this topic is a good place for this discussion.

My experience of Tourism Tasmania(TT) is much the same as my experience with Screen Tasmania, that being that unless you are an operator that has schmoozed to the correct extent with the correct people you will struggle to get promotional opportunities through an industry body set up to look after all operators within that industry. I have met several tourism operators driven to despair over trying to get there businesses recognised by TT, one of which has now folded, predominately as a result of a lack of promotion and being muscled out by a big player in the same town. A visit to Screen Tasmania's site is a blatant example of this, they promote 6 businesses as being 'the local industry', despite there being dozens of good operators around who have all made multiple attempts to be included on their database.

It's all about mates and money, this is why the local screen industry is crippled and why the tourism industry is stagnating, protect the few at the expense of the many, and ultimately the consumer......end of rant

Huh, I actually skipped that link singe, I imagined i was looking for a list of all the operators, not a link to the 'great' walks (ie 4 'preferred' operators, from a small selection of 'preferred' locations....).
(and just how relevant is SBS's post.....)

i'd say it is relevant on a tread titled "tourism Tasmania"
i'd also say that TT discrimination is becoming a joke i have even heard of over here in WA 3-4 000 km away...
not the best publicity for the state

lets hope they have an attack of fair practice and get promoting without the patronising favoritism soon eh!?

Yes, very much so. I intend to compile a proper list of All operators (ie where are 'Adventure Seekers', easily found with a google search for South Coast Track) for those areas mentioned in that link as well as the Other walks available (eg where is Frenchmans?) and post it here somewhere. Perhaps I should send it to TT to help out

(PS.. I know Frenchmans (et al) might not be a 'great walk' but it has guided operators)

as long as all the operators are properly equipped trained etc then the consumer should be the one to decide which is the one for them i think...
