Fagus Hunting

Fri 14 Jan, 2011 9:40 am

We are thinking of flash trip to Tas this Easter, it being a long Easter this year and thinking of making it a Fagus Appreciation trip. So I'm looking for suggestions of good Fagus sites. So far I have appreciated or know about.

Mt Field, various sites
Du Cane Range, both sides
Traveller Range
The Labyrinth

Waterfall Valley is where I will be heading. Looks like late February to early March for my visit, so could well be too early. Does fagus change earlier in wetter than usual seasons??

Mount Field has some splendid little nooks where fagus and rock combine and make sublime photography in wet conditions.

Mt Murchison on the West Coast is absolutely brilliant, and a great little walk to boot.

Dove Lake to Scott Kilvert hut via Hansons Peak, back via Face Track and down past Lake Wilks is always nice.

There is also Mt Ossa.
Good day walk from New Pelion Hut and possibility of excellent views.

Photo of Fagus taken on Anzac Day last year which is recognised as the best time to see the spectacular Fagus display. This photo was taken at Crater Lake just to the right of the boat house - a brilliant display all around this area.

As you'd know Mt Field has some great displays but can get pretty busy around Anzac Day.
