Steep one day walks

Postby Funky_Bunch » Fri 14 Jan, 2011 2:54 pm

Hey Everyone.

Im training for Elbrus, Aconcagua and New Zealand and wondering if anyone know of any long steep ridges close to Hobart I can get some good training on?

I wanna arrive in the best shape I can. so some ridges approaching 45 degrees or steeper, or just some long sustained routes.

Cheers.

Close to Hobart, I'd suggest heading to the Mt Wellington area - take the Zig-Zag track to the summit, or climb Cathedral Rock from Pipeline Track
A bit further afield, Mt Eliza and Schnells Ridge would be a winners for steepness surely... :)

How close? You probably won't get 45deg...

Mt Anne, Western Arthurs Morraine A. or K are fairly relentless but not really close. Nearer to Hobart, I have been told by ILUVSWTAS that there is a track near Mountain River (I think it's Jeffereys Track) up to the back of Wellington that is pretty steep. Good idea to PM ILUV though...

Good call Ollster, Not Jeffreys but the Mountain River trail. Leaves from, well yes Mountain River. And goes up to the saddle between Collins Bonnett and Trestle. Start at under 100m and end up over 1220. It's one of the most relentless uphill slogs going!! Probably more so than Morraine A.
Nothing to see here.

Drys Bluff is also ~2 hours of straight up. Not a hard grade though. Good one to mix it up.

Leave from Betts Rd, follow Cathedral Rock track to the spot where you can cross the NW Bay River to the Pipeline track and go up the steep pipeline to the the Pipeline Track (it comes out near the track to Wellington Falls starts). Horrible way up or down but fits your needs. Going down without grabbing a tree or two is a challenge.

Very true Peter that is a steep section. It's not very long though, only takes several minutes to climb.
