Tiger Lake via Trapper's Hut

Postby Thomas » Fri 04 Mar, 2011 11:37 am

Hey all,

I'm looking at taking a toddle to Tiger Lake via Trapper's Hut & was after some info on:

-The condition of the track from Trapper's to Tiger Lake
-Time to complete the walk

When i was last at Trapper's, i can't recall seeing any track leading from there, maybe someone could enlighten me on locating the start of it...... :)

Also, some tips on locating Solitary Hut would be great...!!!! :D

Rgds

G'day Thomas,
Last time I did it the track was good.
Time taken cannot remember.
Track starts at the back corner of Trappers Hut.
Solitary Hut (GR 403738) South from the end of George Howes there is a foot pad onto a ridge on the East side follow this North about 500m then head East to Tiger Lake and follow the pad to the Hut.

Cant remember any cairns but is quite distinct and alot of logs that have been cut. Once you are on it is easy to follow.
First time I found it, I wasnt even aware that there was a track but started to follow wondering where it went and why it wasnt marked on my map.

Thx norts.

Sounds easy. Have you done the round trip coming out @ Solomons..??? If so, is that a reasonable pad too, or is it off track...???

Regards,
Thomas

I only went in and out same way. Turned around because of foul weather.

The foot pad from George Howes Lake onwards towards Jaffa Vale (ie, through Zion Vale) or alternatively up Wild Dog Creek is quite indistinct - even invisible - for some sections, but navigation is not difficult if you're competent with a map and compass and the weather is good. (Assuming either of those routes is what you meant).

I'm not going to give further details on those sections in the public forum, because I'm not sure if any of it is considered off-track (is any of it an official track at all?), and some small sections could be considered sensitive to increased traffic.

All of this walk - from Trappers onwards - is considered 'off-track' by Parks. The walking pad is quite distinct through to Zion Vale, but the side tracks are a little indistinct in a fair percentage of their length.
