Re: Game: Where-is-it (Aussie)

This one is in SA again. Are NZ shots allowable here BTW?

Hi Photohiker,

A good question that I have thought about before, at the moment no, but if others members would like to consider opening up the Where-is-it (Aussie) to include New Zealand then I am quite happy to discuss the possibility with the moderators.

I'd rather keep it in oz...

I could only see a NZ entry if it was in a dedicated thread - not in the Aussie comp.

NZ has such diversity and numbers of parks that I suspect that such a competition may take days between entries to figure them out.
The Aussie comp will be bad enough as entries become more obscure.

West my friends, WA
naughton.jpg
Mt Meharry, WA's highest peak at 1249m. It's possible for modified 4WDs (raised) to drive to the top. I only had standard high clearance 4WD, not a raised one, I drove to the base then walked - regardless why waste a good opportunity to walk somewhere.

Hills look to be the wrong shape for the Bungle Bungles, maybe the Pilbara area?

Petermann Ranges?

Yes, that is the red dirt of the Pilbara, not the Petermann Ranges.

Curious name on the photo - would it mean this could be the Kennedy Range?

No it is not the Kennedy Ranges, those are a plateau, I haven't been there, looks like an interesting place.

Yes, it is in the Hamersley Range

Some of these are challenging when you haven't been there. I've always associated Hamersley with iron ore so it wasn't my first thought, but It was the only thing I could find that seemed to fit.

Next one from NSW, what summit am I on?

That looks like the bonsai trig on the Granite Peaks.

Not Granite Peaks, which looks to be this one http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/eZfvVS0gZuGdy2lh73Tvyw?feat=embedwebsite, but you're not too far away.

p.s. Welcome to the game...

When I first looked at the photo I had the feeling I had been there, it looks very much like Mt Tate Trig.

Oh uh.... johnw... I just meant to given you a clue. The Hammersley Range stretches over 400km through the Pilbara. A single photo like this can't possibly define the whole 400km.

Yes that's it Tony, Mt Tate trig, only without the snow. We did a circuit starting from Guthega Dam going up the East ridge then back around the other side near the Rolling Ground and over Mt Tate.

 Oops, sorry about that, I read it as that was the answer you were looking for. So how do we proceed, back to your image I guess?

You better win this one johnw, or you will have caused a rip in the fabric of the universe! :D

I also thought jez-au Ok'd the answer, might have to make things a bit clearer next time, we will go back to the Hammersley ranges photo.

jez-au, we might have to have some clues on this one.

Don't worry, it isn't the first time the mountain has been slighted. Nearby Mt Bruce was thought to be the highest peak in WA for over 100 years, until detailed topo surveys were done in the 60s and Mt Meharry, which hadn't even been named, was found to be 13m taller.

To be clear, yes johnw you are correct, it is Mt Meharry :-)

Thanks jez_au, Mt Bruce was the other one I was researching. Phew, the fabric of the universe remains intact Photohiker . To put things back in order, it's Tony's go as he correctly identified my Mt Tate image...

Thanks John, that was a good one jez-au, I am learning so much about Australia.

This next one is going to be a bit easier and it is a where am I, location NSW. Name the place I am standing on and as an extra what is the name of the mountain am I looking at.

The distance looks a bit wrong for some reason and I don't have my own photos from the same place handy to check. But are you standing on Mt Etheridge (not an official name I believe, usually referred to as the unnamed peak on Etheridge Ridge, even though it's the fifth highest peak) looking at Mt Kosciuszko? In which case Rawson Pass is out of view below.

Hi John,

You are correct, it is the unnamed peak on Etheridge Ridge that I am standing on, I am looking at Mt Mt Kosciuszko.

Your turn.

Thanks Tony. We've done a few "peakbagging" day trips in the past to try and scale the highest 20 or so on the mainland and that was included in one of them. I think I'm now only missing 2 of about 23, Gungartan and Jagungal.

What is the name of this NSW waterfall?

Hi John,

Both are very nice walks, though I have only done Gungartan in the winter.

This one tweaked a memory from some earlier research.
I had been scanning over Danger Falls and gorge for another picture you out up.

Dangars Falls and Gorge near Armidale in Oxley Wild Rivers NP. AKA Dangarsleigh Falls apparently.
