That's not good. You'd think if he was young and couldn't self extract from an area like that in 2 days then he's in a lot of trouble.

We found out about 5 o'clock at the ABC but couldn't make any announcement until after next of kin were informed, the police as of 7.30 last night did not release any specific details as to what went wrong.
It goes to show that even on what would be considered a non-technical walk things can go wrong, in the most dire way.

It is very sad. My thoughts are with his family and friends as well. I found myself thinking this could been the result of a snake bite given the nature of the walk (4 hours), though I don't know the area very well.

Still a mystery.

One thing I read,

"Whilst there is a well-marked track there in the Penguin Cradle Trail that he was walking on, there are also a number of unmarked tracks in that area," he said.

"Our people are very familiar with that area, but this highlights the need for walkers to make sure they are on the track they think they're on."

So perhaps the need for a map that includes all the trails could be considered? If you miss just one turnoff (say, for a fallen tree, which happens a lot up there after a wind event), then you are following a trail heading where you think you should be, why would you have any reason to consider the possibility that you are not on the trail you think you're on, if it is not marked?
Just a thought.

I don't know the area, but I would have thought you should get reasonable phone coverage. This with suitable gear, ample food and youth on his side makes it very puzzling.

The story indicated he had been in touch with his wife :
"He took a mobile phone with him and had stayed in touch with his wife when he failed to meet her at his planned destination."

So something went wrong somewhere

Either way, he was described as "well prepared".

no disrespect intended but i am having difficulty understanding how any "well prepared" walker can't survive one 4 hr walk or shelter a night especially when in mobile phone range? it just doesn't make sense to me.
To me a well prepared walker can navigate, has map and compass (and can use em) and a PLB or Spot and a thermal blanket or bag as well as warm waterproof clothes n some food......?
Seems not to be an uncommon occurance lately.
Such a waste and shame. Poor family... This never seems to happen to the nasty folks around

The answer may be in the autopsy results and they either haven't been released or not made public. Yes, there are a lot of questions unanswered at present and it would seem the autopsy results may be the only source for an answer, and it is the family's right to keep those private I imagine.

yes i agree.... would be interesting to know the C.O.D....
it would be interesting to know what the most common COD is for hikers in Tas- Poor prep / equipment? lack of experience in THIS climate & terrain / or physical illness (eg cardio) / trauma etc etc.....

Most likely it was exposure. I remember it was a pretty cold night that night, unless the poor chap had some kind of health issues we dont and most likely wont ever know of.
