The climb toward Geryon including an action shot...

I figure it would be easier to show you than tell you...
So here we are on the way toward Geryon...
When you get to the saddle, you have a jump to contend with...
Me jumping over
My wife jumping back
Or the full jump action jackson...
(If she isn't making it across, click refresh...)
But don't look down...
When you complete the jump, you have a bit of a face to climb...
Then you meander around the edge to the right...
There's another face to climb, a bit more tricky, had to leave my pack there & just took the camera.
But it's all worth it - summit -
You do want a head for heights if you go close to the east face...
And it is quite steep heading down, though there are plenty of feet / hand grips...
As you can see, the weather was just a disaster... I mean, how is a guy supposed to see anything with all that rain and snow...
These were taken on the 26th February 2007.
Following the climb, we headed down and revisited Lake Helios at the foot of Hyperion, where we were 364 days earlier. It's a wonderful place to be to sit on the edge to the north of L.Helios and look out to the north, a great view of Ossa and many of the other mountains in the park. If you plan to go there, let me know and I will tell you the best way to head down to Helios - heading straight down is too much of a bash with all the fagus. There's a better way.

wow... they are some truly impressive shots. Never seen any like it, of Geryon. I'd never be able to talk my wife into doing that! I got her to Lake Oberon, and I was proud of her for that.

OMG- Fantastic photos! I felt queasy just looking at that mighty leap. The 2 of you must be both brave & a tad crazy! I'm new to bush-walking & this forum but have the bug! Cheers, Lizzie.

Indeed that is a pretty specky place to be too... To sit on the southern edge of the plateau looking south toward Geryon, it really is in your face and is impressive.

Adam- Awesom I cannot believe that I have done this sort of walk ,the jump is pants filling or wetting depending on whatever

Hey mate, what an awesome climb! Near the top I think if I had looked down I would have lost my nerve, gone to jelly and filled my pant, probably all at once. I am currently considering a 10 day trip to West Portal in Western Arthurs, but at 55 years old next week, I am not sure I am up to Nth Geryon. Well done and great pics!

The climb to the 'true' (ie. highest) summit of West Portal also requires 1 short section of exposed 'scrambling' just before the summit ridge, where looking down isn't any worse than Geryon North. It is also a 'don't slip' section but pretty straight forward. If 'true' summits aren't your concern then the (marginally) lower west summit affords pretty much the same views - ie. spectacular
The route to Geryon North summit also has an alternative to the 'rock hop' shown in tasadams vid, you simply drop down below this section & climb back up avoiding it all together - it is cairned. Apart from that rock hop & looking over the edge from the summit it really isn't very exposed at all.
Both West Portal & Geryon (north or south) do have another thing in common - they are both mega-classics

Just returned from Geryon Nth and Hyperion.
I'd have to say that jump is VERY over-rated, the gap was about 60cm wide. You just step over it, no jump needed!!
The climb itself is quite exposed, not too difficult for anyone comfortable on rock, but quite exposed and definately a no fall zone. Not one for the faint hearted.
Hyperion was quite similar, probably on a par with Geryon for difficulty.
Tasadam you are selling your wife short, it was an amazing effort for her to get up, and I wouldnt suggest to anyone that either are an easy climb. Certainly not too difficult, but probably the most difficult 2 peaks I have done in my 216 peaks to date.

Well done on achieving both peaks. I enjoyed them both as well and fondly remember them.

I love your little giff, sure makes the photos come to life. These are some amazing views, a mountain on my long list of things to climb!
