Mt Weld

Has anyone been to the summit of Mt Weld?
I recently found a tagged track off a forestry road that appears to lead up to lobster lake..... thought about following it blindly but then thought of asking you knowledgable guys.......

Anyone know anything of it ???

Hi Marky, I can't help you with info on the track but I am curious what road it went off from and how you gained access to it. Did you go over the Weld bridge? Last time I was deown there it had a locked barrier on it.

Would that have been in a time of high fire danger? to my knowledge thats the only time they lock the gate, unless there is some major "forestry operations" going on.. IE tree felling.

So.. sorry to stray, yes I went over the weld river, kept going past glovers bluff along south weld road, past north weld road turnoff. Then you will come to an 80minute return walk (which has a great big roadside sign stating the start of walk) to a place called Ruebin falls which is quite a nice walk (dont recommend it with a baby pack on tho....) the forestry road keeps going for about another k but just before swinging steeply uphill there is a track (seeming) to start on the right. this road now goes quite close to the top of Mt Weld similar to the carpark at Mt Picton. So im thinking it would be a similar walk and hopefully track....

Is this for fishing purposes flyfisher?? I saw some lovely little river trout in the little Denison river just 2 days ago......

It could be either Marky, depending on time of year etc. but I do flyfish quite a bit all over the place.
Some nice rainbows in the Weld river too but water levels need to be low to wade-fish it.

If this is where I think it is, we went a short way up this track, but it soon became very scrubby. We thought it might have been for Angel Falls, but eventually found our way in (to the falls) through a logging coupe.

The only way people I know have gone up to Mt Weld is along Isabella Creek. I've been part way along, but not up to the lakes or summit, so not very far. Expect to do lots of scrub bashing! But from what I've heard, it's worth the effort.

I went to Rubens Falls last week. The last gate before the falls track was closed but on checking found it was not locked. Also went into Tahunethe back way - the gates were open. We checked with forestry at Geeveston before going who advised that the gates are left open now in the area except for one north west of the air walk.

I was down the weld yesterday and the south weld road had a locked barrier just past the Glovers bluff tornoff at 55s476496e 5233979n and near Tahune at 55s477379e 5229492n .
The Weld eddy road was also locked not far from the Weld bridge at 55s478986e 5235081n due to "wet conditions" although the road was dry and dusty.
Most spur roads in the area are also locked.
Really isn't very friendly from Forestry Tas. After reading posts by Marky and others regarding access , I was dissapointed at finding the area "off limits" for whatever reason.

Ok. Now I know where Angel Falls is (roughly at least). So does anyone know if there is a fall off to the east of the Mt. Anne circuit at this location (-42.9707536, 146.4533097)? And what it is called?

I was also under the impression that the falls at the east of Sarah Jane were the "Angel Falls".
Looking at this photo http://martinhawes.info/photography/images/ANN_633.jpg I cannot believe it is not the highest fall in the state?
And it may have no name?

Now I know where I got that impression.

Chapman's South West Tasmania book marks it as "Angel Falls" and describes it as a sidetrip.

But thanks for the thought Marky.

Does anyone know how high it is? The contours seem to suggest at least 100m.

Me & a mate found time for a big (read BIG) day trip up Mt. Weld on Saturday - about 10 hours return, at pace.
A pretty gruelling walk to be sure, & up there with my hardest day walks ever (just behind Bobs in a day probably).
Probably only recommended to those with some off track experience.
I'd recommend taking 2+ days (unless you are a fellow nut), & probably not going alone as sections (particularly the long ascent / descent through the forest) were pretty vague & randomly tagged. There is a solid 3 hours (1.5 hours each way) of cutting grass along the old dozer track at the start / end of this walk & a fair amount of prickly stuff up higher, so scrub gear is essential! We also came across two 4-5' tiger snakes, as if the heart rate wasn't high enough already.
The camping at the high, un-named lake (in foreground in attached photo) looks very nice, tho a little exposed perhaps.
The views from the top, tho a little hazy (easterly haze, therefore not so good for summit photos) were magnificent, Lake Pedder looking quite close to the west across the Gallagher Plateau. A great little adventure

I only know of the Angel Falls off Sarah Jane (-42.972230, 146.451919), but I notice the ref above has now changed (possibly by you even walkinTas?), but does point to falls between Mt Weld and Weld River, which I think are unnamed.

The Angel Falls at Sarah Jane would have water most times but it would slow down quite a bit after a long dry spell. It is usually not a large volume of water that goes over, but given the height and position flares to a mist quite often. Maybe still an unofficial name

I think it flows most but not all of the time. Two years ago we could see no sign of it from the plateau to the north east (where Martin Hawes' photo is from). The next day we passed the creeks that drain into it. They weren't flowing so we didn't bother going down to look.

Thanks for this Peter, James and Brian. I will change the reference in the list back to the falls at Sarah Jane as they were originally (yes, I made the change before) and PM Woka. The second set in the Weld Valley I will leave as "unnamed" for now.... But if anyone has any more info, please feel free to contribute to the discussion.

Hi all,
I did this daywalk the other day, the track is in good condition and freshly tagged. 10.5 hrs at a reasonable pace including sidetrips to the minor summit and the 2 tarns.
I believe the cutting grass horror section at the start of the track is a lot easier than it previously was due to traffic created by Parks research activity recently.
It' an absolute cracker of a walk. Weather was ok Couple of pics

Just playing "the Game" and I noticed that the falls off the plateau near Mt Sarah Jane are now labelled "Angel Falls"!!
I am pretty sure that is a recent change on the List?!

I can't see anything that looks like a significant waterfall, where do you think they should be from this pic?

I do have telephoto of most the area but it was particularly dry when I was on Weld so the falls wouldn't have had a lot of flow.

Somewhere below or slightly to the right of Mt Sarah Jane on the cliff line.

From that distance I think it would be pretty hard to spot anyway.

Yes - it looks dry in this photo. Probably just dripping or weeping at best.

The arrow is about where the List puts it - there is a buttress ramp just to its right that slopes down in front of it and would be a good vantage point to view it.

Just to follow up on this, the Nomenclature Board officially record this set of falls as Angel Falls. The name is only registered once.
