Insulation weight for a parka hood

Sun 24 Jul, 2011 3:53 pm

hi all; I'm upgrading an old ski-parka as an over-layer and it needs an attached hood, what's the best weight of insulation for a hood? Remembering that I will be getting the stuff from Spotlight as all I need is a few grams, looking at manufacturers site they range from 100GSM to 250GSM for belay parkas, and it looks as if Thinsulate or Polarguard are the only insulations being used at the moment, I was going to get the cheapest stuff being sold but thought I would check first.

Body insulation in this old thing is the original woven blanket "Thinsulate" and I am surprised at how warm it still is after 30 years

just remembered that I have some of that thin "Reflective" stuff, we bought it for a curtain liner, I remember discussions on it's use for clothing but can't find the thread.
How warm is the stuff as clothing and is it durable enough to last a winter or three? Assuming I don't wash the parka too often in the next three years that is.

It does keep the teapot warm tho I must say

Just so that others may benefit.
3 ounce polyfill/Thinsulate is way too much fill for a parka hood, in the end I settled on 2 layers of the reflective stuff.

If I need more warmth I will carry an extra beanie or extra separate hood

you can still post it then, I may need to do a rebuild if this doesn't work out.
What I really need is a Patagonia DAS parka but even on sale those things are stoopidly expensive here.

If the whole thing weighs more than 27g its too heavy haha.

After seeing one of those on that viral HF site, I'm tempted. Wonder what the freight would be... :)

If they were balaclavas or full hoods i may have been interested, but may be a little fragile for Alpinism
