A warm bag

Postby ColD » Thu 14 Jul, 2011 4:01 pm

So after a week or more of trying Tassie weather I feel it is an appropriate time to ask what sleeping bags people are using and if they would buy them again/recommend them?

I use a Mountain Designs 850 fill down bag. It's about 3 years old and the exact name escapes me, but if it's anything to judge MD bags, they're really good!

I use a Macpac sleepsystem bag. This is warm enough to cope with a Tasmanian winter but can be unzipped to use as a blanket in summer conditions. The bag has proven to be very well made and long-lasting. This has also been the case with my Macpac Olympus tent and my Macpac cascade pack (the latter still going after 20 years of very heavy use).

I use a Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15F (-9C). Lovely bag, super light (900g), 800 loft down. The only issue I have with it is the lack of a water resistant coating but for it's wait and warmth, it can't be beaten!

One Planet down sleeping bag, about 12 years old, with a silk liner. Still going strong and very comfortable.

One Planet Zephyr. Fairly light weight, very warm (but not as warm as the J&H Winterlite I used to have - but that was waaaaay too warm!).

Has separate zip for the foot box, so I can stick my feet out when they get hot. Opens out fully into a doona/quilt for those warmer nights. Best of all it has glow-in-the-dark zip tags! (small things amuse small minds).

I have the same one Dee, great bag although I haven't used it in Tassie yet. Not waterproof but I thought it does have some sort of limited DWR coating on the outer?

My other bag, that I have used in Tassie a number of times in warmer conditions, sort of (ie including snow - this is Tasmania we're talking about :)), is a very basic Roman Extremelite Zero (synthetic). Warm enough, as long as you have decent insulation underneath. I used an insulated mat plus a very thin layer of foam under it. Pros - inexpensive, quality seems quite good, not as susceptible to water as down. Cons - relatively heavy, bulky.

Yeah johnw, I think you are right! I'm sure it has some sort of treatment but it's nothing next to what my other Mont bag uses (Hydronaute XT) and now after many nights out what it originally had is definitely gone.

Hey guys!

I actully use a black wolf bag. It really is fantastic. It's had a fair bit of wear in it, it also compresses down super small!
Less clothing you wear in it the warrmer it is, however it is a really good light, warm, and comfortable bag I love it! :D

goodluck! Molly.

I use a Mont Zodiac 700. It is only rated to -4, but I have survived comfortably at below -5. I'm about to upgrade to a lighter, warmer bag, the sea to summit alpine II

One Planet Bushlite Super and a silk liner. I really feel the cold at night so I love the warmth of this bag. On the down side it is about 1.6kg so a bit heavier and bulkier than a lot of other bags.

Howitt 850 , had it refilled and topped up by one of those down places a couple of years back , cheap way to update your bag

In my opinion, yes.
I have a Nunatak quilt which weighs 760g including silk inner and S2S eVent compression sack. im unsure what the individual weights are, but i would suspect that the quilt alone would go close to the 500g mark.

This quilt has so far kept me cosy down to 1*c with only the silk inner offering additional warmth, it uses a waterproof breathable outer fabric (untaped seams, so its really just spray proof (i would be comfortable under a tarp with a bit of rain splashing in).

The Western Mountaineering Antelope is extremely warm at least -17 gore windstopper 800+ loft down and weighs about 1 kg. But costs about $1000.
I have the Wetern Mountaineering Untralight -7 - used it last weekend in -11 and was warm. Weighs 800 grams - awesome bag. See Paddy Pallin.
