La Perouse and Pinders Peak: July 2011

Postby creeping_moses » Tue 02 Aug, 2011 7:37 pm

Went in for a one night walk on the Southern Rangers over the weekend just gone.

We hit La Perouse on Saturday and then bivied the night at Ooze Lake (closer to Pinders) so we could summit Pinders and walk back out to Ida Bay on Sunday.

Was a great trip with much snow and very challenging weather. The choice of bivy bags was a great option as we were very fast and light, and covered the km's efficiently. We got to the peaks with no trouble, although there was much ice on Pinders. As expected, the views from the peaks were no good, but we got good views from the other peaks/ranges such at the Moonlight Ridge which provided superb sweepers right the way across to the Tasman. Maxwell Ridge was also a great spot on the way in, as we could see PB and the other Southern peaks with good clarity.

The wind was blasting in traditional SW style, and while traversing the Moonlight Ridge on the way out you could jump up in the air and be moved a few cm's back with your pack on!

Has anyone here ever traversed across to Mt. Leillateah (SE of La Perouse), it looks like a quirky peak to head to!

Some guys from this forum went up Leillateah a couple of years back. From what I hear, its not a recommended walk. Sounds like from where the walk starts going up, the scrub gets incredibly thick. I think it took them 12-14 hours or something silly like that.

Nice work, but you're obviously nuts...
Love the pic looking down on Reservoir Lakes from Maxwell Ridge! How was the wind?

Thanks for posting. The Ida Bay to Pigsty Ponds is a trip very high on my list of "first solos " now that I'm in Tas. Good to know it doesn't look too bad even in less than ideal conditions. Although I might wait for the weather to improve a bit. :(

*snigger*

I'm sure the site search tool would bring up something interesting on Leillateah.

14h 47m actually. Could've been closer to 12 hrs but we made a tactical error - not going back the way you came up. It was a fun morning/afternoon/evening/night and almost morning.

That was from down on the road to Cockle Creek. Attempting it from the Southern Range would be crazy, but impressive.

Nice work moses, a big weekend effort!
Yes, Leillateah was a fun day walk, but 15 hours was on the high end of long; still, I was still smiling at the end.
I have heard the traverse from La Peruose to Leillateah is pretty horrendous, i'd imagine a lot of scoparia scrub...still, nothings impossible with time :D
