Stacks Bluff

Thu 23 Dec, 2010 3:34 am

Hi all

Christmas is nearly here again for another year!

I'm after some info in relation to Stacks Bluff, How long does it roughly take to complete a return trip to Stacks from the Rossarden entry? Could this easily be completed as a day walk?

Have many of you completed the walk and what are your thoughts on it? I'm a keen photographer and have veiwed some great shots from that area.

Any info would be greatly appreciated :D

Regards

Matt

I've done the walk twice and have taken about 6 hours return both times. The return drive from Hobart is about as time-consuming as the walk.

Hi Matt

I'm keen to actually do a traverse from the Rossarden end and come out on the ski village end at some stage this summer; only problem is I'm not quite sure how to get there and then home etc with car arrangements.

If you are keen to do it at some stage and would be happy for someone to hitch a ride (for a fee of course) then I'd love to grab a ride to the Rossarden end, make my way up and across and then have a car sitting up the northern end or something to get home (still figuring that one out too  ).

And yeah, 6 hours sounds about right - I've done Stacks twice.

Cheers

Phil

That sounds like a plan Phil, I'm sure we could sort something out during the season :) I should be able to organise a drop off n pick up person for us both!

A group of us (4) are planning to do the Ossa summit in a day trip, we are planning to do a few day trips before hand to blow the cobwebs out, do you recommend any day walks that would put some pressure on us? pref in the north, we are all launie based. Was planned to do Ossa last year, but the plan feel through due to unforeseen circumstances, so it’s still on the "to do list"

Thanks for your info, will keep in touch and sort out a trip :)

Matt

Further to my previous post, does any body know of a lake or tarn called "crystal" in the Ben Lomond area, a friend of mine went there as a young boy (>15 years ago) and now is trying to re-locate the lake/tarn. He thinks it may be Irish town way. He recalls the water being crystal clear and had possible 4WD access...

Any info / location would be great

:? i found the start to the sphinx bluff track but drove through stories and up some logging roads as far as the corolla could handle and didnt see a sign. I thought it was pretty well marked too...bugger

I was there a couple of weeks ago and I think the sign is missing. The track starts up the road that goes past the old cricket oval (overgrown a bit) and when you get to the top of the track/road a cairned route heads off to the left and then up.

I have wanted to get up there too Wayne. I have managed to get to the start of the track. Not really that easy to negotiate. Some pics might help!

The road in from the south was closed for some time as the bridge marked was washed away.
The 'road' shown from Storeys Creek ends up as lot closer to the escarpment than shown. I also can't remember how many turns before reaching the parking area shown. The trick was to keep to the older roads heading on a bearing at right angles away from Stacks Bluff.

Opposite the house you might be able to just make out on the right.

A new logging road heading towards Stacks Bluff. The way to the track heads sharply back to the right off this road.

There is a 20 minute walk between the parking area and this sign to where it looks like the track proper starts.

It is probably worthwhile taking the side trip to Tranquil tarn on this walk. I did on the way back a couple of years ago.

Great Wayne. Do you have details on how long it took to get to Tranquil Tarn from the start of the track.

Hi Gerry, I did not notice the tarn until I was nearly at the top of the steep rock climb, but 3/4 hour should be about it from the start of the track. I did not notice any tracks leading off the main Stacks Bluff track, but knowing it is there a turn to the right when you see the steep climb would be the go. It looks if it would be rocky.
BTW, next week I'm going to Mt Saddleback, people have said it is very hard to get to the summit, the last 100 meters, I was wondering what the problem was?

The problem is they took the wrong route! My 2 medium sized dogs made it up without any difficulty and I can't remember having any problems.

thanks everyone for the info on this. i had taken the correct turnoff last time but veered left instead and thought i'd missed something..found it easy today (stacks written on a log in blue spraypaint). The sign that gerryduke posted at storeys creek is stilll there but reads KILL EM or something now :) charming. great walk, cheers again!!

I celebrated my 30th birthday yesterday with a walk to Stacks Bluff. No better way to celebrate! A great walk with fantastic views and the track is really well marked. The boulder field is amazing and the cool water in Tranquil Tarn was a welcome relief for tired feet. My other half even lugged his bagpipes to the summit to play happy birthday for me!
