September trip...

Postby mjdalessa » Thu 01 Sep, 2011 3:09 pm

Am planning a trip in september but have not yet decided on what. Can someone help me out for some brief notes for Ossies track (reynolds falls) and Bonds Crag? Also, I suppose you do not have to pack haul on the way to oberon seeing Chapman doesnt mention it?
My options are:
Lake Rhona
Lake Oberon
Pindars

Reynolds falls as a back up plan (Id prefer to do it in winter)

Thanks, mjdalessa

To get to the summit rock of Bonds Craig its a simple stroll along the ridge from Reeds Peak. Getting to the tippidy top is another matter all together.

All three are top trips. As Frenchy said getting to the summit block of Bonds Crag is very easy, just follow the track up onto the range from the southern side of Lake Rhona up over Great Dome, past the base of Reeds Peak and keep following the ridge line out towards Bonds. I don't recall any of our group needing to pack haul until after Oberon, of course it depends on the group members and how comfortable they are with a little scrambling etc but from memory there isn't anything that should really require it on the way to Oberon.

Cheers,
Michael.

Haven't been to Reynolds Falls...yet.
Bee to your other chosen destinations.
If you are thinking of doing the extensions (ie. full range traverses) then best to leave Pindars & Oberon for those occassions.

I would recommend the Denison Range as a fantastic 3 day trip.
Day 1 to Lake Rhona, day 2 to explore the range, day 3 out & home.
I have been in here twice, once to do this truncated version and more recently to add the traverse south to the Stepped Hills / Mt Wright, also a really great trip:

Bonds Craig is a dangerous summit, no denying...I did it first trip & decided against doing it again on the second trip, best not to gamble your luck too much.
If you fell going for the tippy top the result would be near fatal / fatal depending on how you tumbeld / what you hit on the way down the slabs.
Others have used rope to ensure safety if you're not so confident moving on rock / in exposed situations.

^^^your link didn't work stu^^^ see if I do any better viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5320&p=64108&hilit=stepped#p64108

I used a rope on the summit block, but unless you have confidence with your technique the rope might add to the danger, it's still an amazing area that I went to as my first remote solo trip.

I was wondering about that having seen those photos awhile ago. I'll just go and see what I think, long slabs like that are what really scare me. Thanks for the info guys! Anyone been along Ossies track? I cant understand why more people havent been, out of about 10 odd experienced bushwalkers I know personally only 1 has been.

That is not the approach I was planning to take, but thanks anyway, there was another link. Great dome- reeds peak- bonds crag and some exploring around the lakes would be a pretty comfortable day from rhona right?

Very easy day, the walking up there is nice and open. It would be like your very own scene in the Sound of Music. without the germans, or the alps, or Julie Andrews or... you get my picture
