TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

G'day my hiking list

G'day all, I am a Scout Leader who is returning to hiking after a 20 year lay off! I have done a couple of smaller hikes and started to assemble my gear list. I would be interested in what people think and if they have any views on future purchases!

Tent, I have a choice of a tarptent Contrail or North face Meso 22. The Meso is a dual wall at about 1.6kg and the tarptent at 0.7kg. I Like the Meso in warmer conditions. Although if my son goes with me he wants to pinch the Tarptent for himself, he say I snore! Truth beknown I think he would be happier with a tarp and bivvy bag.

Sleeping Bag, got a vango at about 600g, good down to 8 degrees or so, below that freezin! Looking at a new bag soon, anyone had experience with the Seas to Summit bags. They look good 650g for 0c.

Pack, well as luck would have it when I was getting a couple of Osprey Aces for my kids I saw last years Osprey Aether 65 for $100! Well a great price but heart is still set on a featherlite freedom one day.

Stove, Kovea Titanium, does the job nice and light!

Looking at a EPIRB but for land and also a light weight tarp to string up to offer shade or somewhere for us to sit under if it rains.
I have been lucky and purchased most of this stuff slightly second hand or in the clearance bins!

Those are some pretty good deals! The lightest gear I've come across to date I've found at http://zpacks.com/ but it doesn't come cheap. Still, it's worth checking out. They have a sleeping bag rated to -1C that weights only 383g, though it costs $305 US. The tents and backpacks are also ridiculously light, as they take advantage of the strength of cuben fiber and silicon coated nylon.

I found an ultralight stove online that might be worth checking out (http://www.packafeather.com/stove.html), though personally I just made my own out of an aluminium deodorant can following these instructions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcrW27Leo4w&feature=player_embedded
