Getting started
This walk heads into the 'Valley Terminal' building, where you can buy a ticket for the lift. Continue through the building and up the steps, where this walk turns right to find the bottom terminal of the 'Kosciuszko Express'. Walk up to the platform as directed by the chairlift operator and sit down in the seat, letting it scoop you up. Once seated, pull down the safety bar and enjoy the ride to the top of the ridge. :) At the top step of the chair lift and turn left to find the restaurant (now on your right) and track information signs ahead.....

	Start. Cascades (about 55 m back from the start). There is a picnic table (about 30 m back from the start). There is an artwork (about 20 m back from the start). There is a car park. Find the artwork at the start. After another 7 m cross the bridge (about 25 m long) Continue straight. After another 40 m find the "Kosciuszko Express Chairlift" (25 m on your left). Kosciuszko Express Chairlift This is one of the few lifts operating in the summer months at Thredbo, and is made quite popular by thousands of people walking to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko each year. Lift tickets can be purchased from the store at the bottom of the chairlift. Lift tickets are $31 return ($25 one way) per person. This lift is generally closed during November and May for maintenance each year, but the the Snowgum chair can be used at this time instead, this will add extra walking time to you walk. After another 10 m pass the toilet (10 m on your left)., male. Then pass the toilet (15 m on your left)., female. Continue straight.
	After another 25 m turn right. Then head up the steps (about 20 m long)
	Continue straight. After another 15 m catch the aerial cable car (about 1.8 km long) After another 20 m pass the toilet (30 m on your right). After another 20 m pass the sign (9 m on your right).
	Turn left. After another 30 m find the "Eagles Nest Restaurant" (9 m on your left). Eagles Nest Restaurant This is Australia's highest restaurant, providing great food and outstanding views. It is easily accessible, nestled on the mountain directly opposite the top of the Kosciuszko Express chairlift, and is open year-round. For more information, call (02) 64576019.
	Turn right, to head along Merritts Nature Trail. After another 305 m continue straight. After another 20 m continue straight.
	After another 35 m (at the intersection of Merritts Nature Trail & Village Trail) veer right, to head along Merritts Nature Trail (a walking track). After another 25 m continue straight, to head along Merritts Nature Trail. After another 10 m pass the "Black Sallees" (35 m on your right). After another 245 m find the "Lower bench seat" (6 m on your left). Lower bench seat This small lookout on Merritts Nature Track provides a seat and a view looking north across a wide gully. A small creek cascades down the rocks through the gully. There is limited natural shade from the snow gums here. A nice place to rest and enjoy the view whilst giving your knees a rest.
	After another 210 m turn right, to head along Merritts Nature Trail.
	After another 270 m continue straight, to head along Merritts Nature Trail. After another 105 m pass a seat., has no backrest. Then find the "Picnic Lookout" (4 m on your left). Picnic Lookout This partially fenced lookout platform is perched on a rock and provide great views down across Friday Flats to the range on the other side of Thredbo River. There is a picnic table and a bench seat, but limited shade. This make a great place to stop, rest and enjoy the valley views. After another 370 m continue straight, to head along Merritts Nature Trail. After another 55 m continue straight, to head along Merritts Nature Trail.
	After another 250 m continue straight, to head along Merritts Nature Trail.
	After another 430 m (at the intersection of Merritts Nature Trail & Meadows Nature Track) turn left, to head along Merritts Nature Trail. After another 215 m cross the bridge (about 25 m long) Then find the "Thredbo Village Weir" (6 m on your left). Thredbo Village Weir The Thredbo Weir can be found on the Merritts Nature Track, along a creek that flows from the Rams Head Range. The weir is used to supply water to the village below. After another 230 m cross the ford.
	The starting point of an optional sidetrip. An optional side trip to Birralee Bushcamp. To start this optional side trip veer right here. On returning from this side trip turn around when you get back to this intersection. Details below. At the intersection of Merritts Nature Track & Merritts Creek veer left, to head along Merritts Nature Track.
	After another 145 m (at the intersection of Merritts Traverse & Merritts Nature Track) turn right (a service road). Then cross the bridge (about 40 m long)
	After another 25 m continue straight. After another 520 m find the "Thredbo Bobsled" (on your left). Thredbo Bobsled With a twisting and turning path more than 700m long, this luge-style track is a great summer activity for the family to enjoy whilst staying in Thredbo. Offering individual rides or day passes, allowing you to enjoy this fun ride as many times as you want as you whizz down the mountain on your cart, controlling your speed with a neat hand-break system. Continue straight.
	After another 200 m turn left. After another 40 m continue straight. Then cross the bridge (about 25 m long)
	After another 7 m come to the end.

Covered in snow & closed part of the year
This walk leads through an extreme alpine environment and all walkers must be well prepared. During summer, be prepared for both very hot and cold weather, high winds, rain, snow, extreme UV levels and some sections of snow or ice on the ground. Before starting this walk, check advice with Snowy Region Visitor Information Centre (02) 6450 5600, the weather forecast and the snow conditions then change your plans as needed. These notes, grades and walking times have been written for use in the summer months only. Part of this walk is used as a groomed winter ski run. This walk is closed and should not be attempted when there is a chance of significant snow on the ground.

Kosciuszko Express Chairlift
This is one of the few lifts operating in the summer months at Thredbo, and is made quite popular by thousands of people walking to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko each year. Lift tickets can be purchased from the store at the bottom of the chairlift. Lift tickets are $31 return ($25 one way) per person. This lift is generally closed during November and May for maintenance each year, but the the Snowgum chair can be used at this time instead, this will add extra walking time to you walk.

Eagles Nest Restaurant
This is Australia's highest restaurant, providing great food and outstanding views. It is easily accessible, nestled on the mountain directly opposite the top of the Kosciuszko Express chairlift, and is open year-round. For more information, call (02) 64576019.

Lower bench seat
This small lookout on Merritts Nature Track provides a seat and a view looking north across a wide gully. A small creek cascades down the rocks through the gully. There is limited natural shade from the snow gums here. A nice place to rest and enjoy the view whilst giving your knees a rest.

Picnic Lookout
This partially fenced lookout platform is perched on a rock and provide great views down across Friday Flats to the range on the other side of Thredbo River. There is a picnic table and a bench seat, but limited shade. This make a great place to stop, rest and enjoy the valley views.

  Guthega Road will be closed between Island Bend and Guthega (Munyang) Power Station from 7am to 5pm on Monday to Friday during the following periods:

  These closures are necessary to complete the remaining culvert replacements and allow all asphalt works to be finalized by the June long weekend.

  Guthega track head carpark will be closed to vehicles. Signage will be in place advising public to park in main Guthega carpark. Pedestrian access will be maintained through the carpark to the Snowies Alpine Walk and Illawong Walk track head.

  A baiting program using meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison will be conducted from Saturday 22 March 2025 to Monday 22 September 2025 in Kosciuszko National Park.

  The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting an ongoing baiting program from Saturday 8 February 2025 to Thursday 7 August 2025. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. This program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.
  Baiting programs will take place across Kosciuszko National Park in Thredbo/Ingebyra, Dalgety/Paupong and Corrowong/Tombong/Merriangaah Wild Dog Plan Areas. Baiting programs will also be undertaken in Paupong, Merriangaah and Quidong Nature Reserves.
  This includes the following sections of Kosciuszko National Park: Thredbo Valley, Moonbah, Ingebyra, Paupong, Numbla Vale and Corrowong.
  Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location.   Safety alerts: Powerline removal being undertaken in the Jagungal Wilderness Area
  Contractors will be undertaking removal of the 11kva powerline within the Jagungal Wilderness Area. This line was damaged in the 2019/2020 fires and is no longer functional. Please be aware that heavy machinery will be operating at various times. The contractor will have warning signs in place.
  
  Closed areas: Closed areas due to Snowy 2.0 works
  The following areas are closed due to the Snowy 2.0 works from Monday 25 February 2019 until early 2027, unless the closure is extended or removed:

  Closed areas: Tantangara Reservoir partial closure
  Some parts of Tantangara Reservoir will be closed intermittently until further notice for Snowy 2.0 construction activities involving controlled blasts. Full exclusion zones will be established prior to and during blast operations. The closed areas are:
  
  Areas of Tantangara Reservoir adjacent to the Snowy 2.0 construction site.
  
  Tantangara Reservoir boat ramp, adjacent to the Tantangara Dam wall.
  
  For up-to-date timings on controlled blasts please see notifications on the Future Generation website.

  There is an increase in heavy and light vehicle movements on the Snowy Mountains Highway (between Cooma to Tumut) and Link and Tantangara Roads within Kosciuszko National Park. This traffic will continue for a number of years and involves the use of specialised heavy vehicle combinations for transporting materials associated with the Snowy 2.0 project and other projects in the region.

  Other planned events: Notice of Pindone rabbit control program - Thredbo
  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using carrots containing pindone (pindone, sodium salt) poison for the control of rabbits. This program will take place between Monday 28 April and Friday 30 May 2025 within the Thredbo Lease Area, within Kosciuszko National Park.
  All baiting locations will be signposted, and include the village, golf course and on the mountain. Free feeding using non-poisoned carrots will be undertaken before using pindone oats.
  Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets may be affected by pindone. Pets must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

  Closed areas: Kosciuszko National Park closed sites
  A number of sites in Kosciuszko National Park are closed or may have other restrictions until further notice.
  Road Closures
  Olsens Road BEYOND Geehi Dam. Olsens Road remains open from the Alpine Way to Geehi Dam.
  Fire-affected areas
  Some sections of Kosciuszko National Park which burnt during the 2019/2020 fires remain closed. These areas include:
  
  Wolgal and Pattinson's Huts
  
  Huts that burnt down in the 2020 fires
  These locations remain open, but the following huts or buildings have been lost:
  
  Linesman's No.3 Huts, Round Mountain Hut, and Dry Dam Ski Shelter.
  
  Warning: Please take care as there may be broken glass/nails that are uncovered since NPWS made records and cleaned up these sites. Please do not disturb the sites or remove artefacts.
  
  Snowy 2.0 works affecting access to Tantangara Road and Tantangara Dam
  
  Access to the southern end of Tantangara Reservoir via Quarry trail is closed to the public.
  
  Access to the southern end boat ramp is open, but may be subject to short-term closures.
  
  Current boating and camping access to Tantangara Reservoir will still be available at access points on the northern end of the reservoir, via Port Phillip and Dam trails.
  
  Do not enter closed areas in Kosciuszko National Park. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the local NPWS office.
  
  Closed areas: Thredbo River picnic area toilet closed
  Recent severe winds have brought down a tree on the toilet block at Thredbo River picnic area. As a result the toilet block is closed and cannot be used. Please be aware that contractors will be working at the site and will have vehicles moving in and out of the area. Other facilities at the site are available.
  
  Other planned events: Notice of ongoing 1080 wild dog and fox baiting program
  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program in the north east precinct of Kosciuszko National Park, Scabby Range and Yaouk Nature Reserves within the Adaminaby/Yaouk wild dog control area.
  The program will be continuous and ongoing between 1 March 2025 and 31 August 2025, and will use meat baits and canid pest ejectors containing 1080 (sodium fluroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.
  All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.
  Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserve. Pets and working dogs may be affected, and 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs in the vicinity must be restrained or muzzled and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

  Other planned events: Tom Groggin campground - upgrade works
  The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and contractors will be undertaking upgrade works at Tom Groggin campground throughout 2025. These works will include additions to campground facilities and rehabilitation planting.

  Safety alerts: Management trail works
  Trail maintenance works are underway on management trails east of Tantangara Road. These trails include:

  Take care when travelling in areas where heavy plant is operating. Notification signage will be in place in areas of operation.
  Works will not be undertaken over the Easter period.
  
  Other planned events: Notification of Ongoing 1080 Baiting - Wild Dogs/Foxes
  NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing ground baiting program from 24th February 2025 to 24th August 2025 . The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of feral animals including wild dogs and foxes.
  The program will take place in Kosciuszko National Park and Clarkes Hill, Bogandyera and Jingellic Nature Reserves.
  The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.
  Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

  Other planned events: Fire trail maintenance work - Cascade Trail
  Fire trail maintenance work is currently being undertaken on Cascade Trail between the Alpine Way and the Cowombat/Ingeegoodbee Trail intersection.
  Notification signage is present at the entry to work areas. Trail users are to be aware of heavy plant movements and comply with all directions from contractors and NPWS staff.

  Safety alerts: Guthega Road - changed speed limit due to ongoing road works
  The speed limit on Guthega Road has been reduced to 60km for the entirety of the road due to ongoing road works.
  Please abide by all traffic control signage and observe all directions from NPWS staff and contractors.
