I bought the Farm Pride brand from our local Coles yesterday. One container shaped like a Pringles tube has the equivalent of 12 eggs.
I just went to the post office and picked up a package from Wilderness Dining. There is a shallow baking dish that you can put coals on the lid, or use on top of a canister etc (Fry-Bake pan) and an oven bake cozy (UL Outback Oven) and a lightweight trivet (Oven Packer). Postage was great, and it was shipped here in just a couple of days. I'm still waiting on a couple of baking pans and carbon fibre cozies from Flat Cat and a titanium peg (Stix) and grill set to complete my gourmet hiking cookset.
I want to experiment premixing dry ingredients in a zip lock bag for some bread, cakes, brownies etc and see how they go. I'll have an experiment with scrambled aggs and a vegetable flan too (maybe mix dehydrated veges like tomatoes, capsicum, shallots, opnion, peas, herbs and spices etc). Hopefully some things will work, otherwise our dogs wil have interesting dinners this week! Ruben our Pug and Pocket our Jack Russel Terrier will eat almost anything

PS Pocket Rocket is the JRT's name which I think is pretty funny seeing there's a MSR stove called that. Mini motorbike too. Also a vibrator, one of my friends told me with a smirk

Good to hear that they are available at local stores. I like freshly cooked breakfast when out there.

Phil I've tried two local Coles and 3 woolies to no avail. Im in Syd till Mon now but I'll try the other coles close by when I return. Mind you if I find em down here I'll nab them. I know my local coles (when living in Syd has them).

All of the powdered eggs that I've had in the past taste like what I imagine crap tastes like.

OvaEasy eggs are awesome! First time the wife and kids turned their noses up at the idea of eating them - EVER! No way would they touch them! But after a week I started to covertly prepare and cook them (several times) at home for breakfast as omelettes and they honestly couldn't tell the difference - they loved them! Great when backpack weight is at a premium - but when it isn't nothing beats fresh eggs.

One 128gm pouch of OvaEasy claims the equivalent to a dozen eggs - they must be tiny eggs - I reckon it would be equal to 10eggs.

I'm not a fussy eater BUT those regular powdered eggs (i.e. FarmPride) are really, really awful - no matter how much junk I throw in when cooking to mask the awful smell and taste - it doesn't get any better. It's one of those few tastes in life where you have to immediately brush your teeth and flush the mouth to rid taste.

I recently bought a bag of OvaEasy. I mixed up the equivalent of one egg (2 Tbls of powder) and fried it with just a pinch of salt and pepper. After all of the horrible powdered eggs I have tried over the years I wasn't expecting too much. But... it tasted just like a real egg!!

There was Powdered Egg at the New Town, Tasmania, Woolworths store last weekend. It was just below the eggs.

PE accidentally caught my eyes last weekend while looking for plain flower. PE at $5.99 a pack of 150grams.

I found it cheapest to import from the US.. If for personal use you can bring a kg (already covered earlier but worth mentioning) I could really not see the difference, what was right then wrong between .75 and 1.25kg. To me this was all that mattered but customs saw it differently.. what a drama that turned out to be- I suspect they are still enjoying my eggs to this day (meh)

Just a heads up on importing. We bring in the regulated amount now and then, declare content and pay tax. From the above, should have expected to continue treat customs like any other large institution, with kid gloves.

Be careful adding anything that may be questionable to an order. Customs will default to freaking out at the mere mention of such things as egg crystal:



This one is ongoing. I had to get a declaration from the dried egg company manager. Surprisingly he replied straight away! Apparently protectionist policy has led them to give up trying to offer this product in Au.. once he had it sorted they changed the rules.. anyhow, his declaration, It is funny;

I only ate the eggs once and about 5 days later I came down with a low grade GI illness that persisted on and off for 7 weeks. The typical incubation time for Salmonella is 12-72 hours but apparently it can be as long as 120 hours with low bacterial doses. Or it was just a coincidence. But true to the irrationality of human nature I'm now not too excited about ever eating powdered eggs again.

Yes, the duration doesn't fit. And my symptoms didn't either (I had no diarrhea). Also several tests by my doctor found nothing wrong. Who knows what was messing with me?

But GI illnesses do a funny thing to a human's brain. I've seen this many times where someone I know has decided, without any sort of proof, that something or someplace they ate prior to a GI illness was the cause. And forever after they avoided that food/place. I know that the eggs are probably not why I got sick but my gut reaction is one of disgust at the thought of eating them now.

Yeah, thanks. The ones I have appear to be ok. The dodgy ones seem to be a few 'batches' rather than the whole year(+).
Though I can imagine they'd be hard to eat if you have thought they may have made you sick.

You'd know if you had salmonella poisoning!

Both my kids were hospitalised, in isolation and on IV fluids after they were infected after eating raw eggs by licking the bowl and spoon when I was making muffins. The muffins were for my daughter's 7th birthday to take to school. As the affected eggs were cooked in the muffins, thankfully none of the children at school were infected. I spent a worrying few days waiting to if any other children had become sick! Clinical signs are exhibited usually within 12 -24 hours after ingestion.

The hospital staff said 'smells like rotavirus', and were going to leave their diagnostic testing at that. I asked for cultures to be done (hubby and I are both vets and have dealt with dogs, cattle and horses with salmonella, also the possibility we were carriers). I had to ask them to type the strain as well, when it came back positive.

I don't think you could get salmonella poisoning from eating powdered dried eggs that had been cooked. The risk is raw eggs, eg in mayonnaise, sauces, egg flips etc.
My children are both in high school now, but in our house no-one licks the bowl when we make cakes etc!

Is there any update on importing OvaEasy egg crystals? I can't find any on eBay and the NZ company importing them there no longer does so according to their website.
