long sections of the hillary trail can be a mudbath outside of summer. the clay soil also gets greasy in the wet, they are slowly improving the track a bit in sections
http://regionalparks.aucklandcouncil.go ... lary-trailthe waitakeres are a relativeley small park, but covered with 250k's of tracks. most of the forest is regrowth. massive problems with the kauri trees dying off in ever larger numbers from Kauri dieback disease.

the beaches are covered with aucklanders on the weekend in the warmer months, several thousand of them at piha alone....

Well it was pretty quiet whilst I was there. I guess a sunny early spring week end was a good timing. And as usual, a lot less people doing the walks than admiring the beaches.
