Aysen Glacier Trail (Chilean Patagonia)

Sun 16 Mar, 2014 7:12 pm

A few snaps from our recent trip to Patagonia. The Aysen Glacier trail including crossing glacier Nef can only be hiked with guides which also means no other people on the trail and the huemuls are almost tame.

Awesome.
Are the rings around the mountains just above glacier level indicating former ice level? If so they have dropped alot.
Thanks for the great photos. The forest section looks like a pleasant walk.

Yes tibboh that is the former glacier level, the glaciers around there are receding very quickly. It is pretty scary when the guides point out where the front of the glaciers were only 5 to 10 years ago. There are some aerial photos I saw recently of glacier chico a little further south showing how fast it is receding. Interesting comparison to see the google earth image https://www.google.com.au/maps?t=h&ll=-47.2567923,-73.2201163&spn=0.0400475,0.0786746&q=Cerro+Castillo+National+Reserve&cid=0xe004d209df04906e&output=classic (not sure of its date) and our photo of the front of glacier colonia.

Apologies for the slight necropost, but if you thought the drained lakes and recent bathtub trim lines were interesting, this is a great article about the Colonia Glacier:
